The Awakening

'Hey let's go...! What you waitin for...?

To get locked back again? Huh!'

It was Leo. He dragged himself in front of my open cell and gestured me a way out.

I had no idea where I was and what the hell was I doing in an asylum! It all seemed so blur. My mind was heavy. Like shackled within. I could hardly walk. I tried to follow Leo's lead as I crawled out of my pitiful chamber. He was standing just right there, in the dark, his incisive eyes were constantly searching for something as if he could see beyond the cover of the blackening, foggy, smudge! My head was flushing with the most ridiculous of pains. I tried several vain attempts to stand up but every time, my weak legs gave up!

If it weren't for Leo, I may would have had to crawl my way out of the bloody abyss!

I stood aside him and began to walk through the corridor, it seemed to have no end and perhaps it was lightened by the darkness itself! Distant echoes of cries and alarms was all that populated the ambiance, no sane mind could have dreamt a nightmare such like.

It was not just us, all sorts of criminal minded psychos were now free. Tiny red lights blinked and the horrible sound of crying alarms continued blaring off. There was no one trying to close the cells, No one trying to hold back the prisoners.

'Shh...!'

Leo suddenly jerked himself on the side of the trail and tried to quiet down my movement, the dragging sounds I was creating. He pointed at a distant image, it was a person, a retard perhaps

'He is a killer!'

He said that while smiling grimly and moving back to a diversion and taking cover in a shadowed corner, I duplicated his move but rather than a corner I had to hide In front of an open containment cell with a maniac staring straight at me. Leo began to lower his body, getting ready for the moment of ultimate success. The so called killer, making horrible noises with his punctured mouth and dragging a dead body behind him just stood nearby. His terrible laughs seemed like erecting from deep within a freshly dug grave. As soon as he turned, Leo leapt on him from behind with nothing but his bare hands. He was on top of the rapidly gasping man whose laughs had somewhat changed into desperate mourning. He looked at me helplessly, trying to extend his arm In hope that reaching me would give him some rest but Leo was relentless, two or three cross hand blows right on his throat followed by a creaking sound of broken bones confirmed that only his eyes were alive, still staring at me. I looked away and realized that the maniac was standing right next to me and had his pants zipped down.

'Son of a bitch...!'

I growled at him with my eyes wide open, trying to scare him off. But it was me who soon had to dodge his swirling wave of urine aimed at me. He dearly wanted to hit me with it, as his idiotic na na na and ha ha ha rhyme suggested, which seemed to have lost its intensity as I successfully got out of the way, but just to make sure I wiped the bottom of my pants like my sanity had struck me back and I was getting conscious of my filthy attire.

Leo was still sitting on the supposedly dead killer. Murmuring something to himself while occasionally glaring at me and then back at the dead body. He tilted his head to the right, taking a pause and perhaps saying something with his eyes to the asshole standing next to me; or so it seemed as the maniac quickly turned himself towards the vacant Wall of his cell and looking over his shoulder every now and then. His face seemed to have lost the expression of fun and amazingly evolved into muffled sobs. After all he was crazy!

Leo got back up and began to walk as I silently followed him into a number of alleys. When suddenly he stopped, he looked at me and passed a smile as though he was glad to see me there, and again started walking towards the cross passage. The pathway was now getting broader suggesting that perhaps the main building was only a few steps ahead.

What was this place? Where was I? Why was I here? These questions continued to occupy my mind but were bound to return unanswered. My head was still dizzy and it felt on two or three occasions that I would fall out of the hectic walk. To be honest I had no idea who even Leo was!  but he was with me from a long as I could recall. I hardly had a memory but whatever I had on the faded part of my brain, was that Leo was always there. Helping me.

Meanwhile we reached the junction that joined the prison areas to the main control room. Whatever of wardens were there, were either dead dealing with unbridled killing machines or were trying to get control over them. The pungent smell of the human flesh was everywhere and was getting thicker the more we moved into the hallway which presented a vision of carnage at a glimpse. It was hard to differentiate if the dead were the psychos or the wardens! But it was clear that when the lightning bolt would have hit the power control from the outside and when the system malfunctioned; most of the people, at least those who had their sanity intact must have fled.

Leaving behind a few unlucky, like the one doctor sitting in the small control room hoping for a miracle that could help fire up the backup generator and give him some control over the situation. Leo with his mysterious smile tilted his neck towards me as he had earlier and I could see in his eyes the torrent of dark desires overpowering him. The awkward moment of suspicious looks was interrupted when the generators seemed to start but then went out like last glimmers of hope.

'Follow me... Daniel... Watch and learn...!'

Leo said, like he was stirring up something murderous. Poor doctor had not locked the door in his anxiety that was now to cost him his life!

Leo picked up the pen on the far side of the table and issued me signs as such he wanted me to observe. With the pointed side he stabbed the pen right into the ribs. He didn't seem to stop, one after another stab and then again! Until finally he could see fountains of blood drawn out of his helpless body. He wasn't finished! Not yet. He took the pen out while still holding the guy from his neck and pressing hard his face so that his moans were suppressed and didn't attract any unwanted attention. Leo was unstoppable. He let all his power drain through the pen into the poor victim’s eye and looking closely, he plucked the whole damn eye with it, still fresh, but splattered. On his way out of the room he picked up the map while handing me he pen with the eye still on it. It dropped from my cold hands as I continued to follow Leo.

Using the map we reached far side of the asylum where there was a window. With doors all shut due to power failure, we broke out of it and Alas! We were in open air in the backyard of the cold Pitt.

There was a delivery truck, manned. We got into it as our only ticket out of this hell.

'Let's get your medicines and get your head straight...!'

Leo whispered to me and I nodded my head.

'They must be in your house...!' he added.

'... But it's burned...!' I replied hesitantly as I remembered a ghastly burning image.

'We'll check in the basement...! It must be in that box...! Fire couldn't have crept into the basement ... And after that we will burn them...!'

He said that while grinding his teeth and handing me over the sharp piece of glass he had pulled out of the window pane. Firmly closing my hand on it accentuating the fact that I was ready to kill. He laid back with his eyes closed as the truck began to move out. I was still looking at that glass trying hard to find a reflection of myself.
