Junior year, time to buckle down. No boys, no girl drama, no distractions. At least this is what I told myself in September.
In the final weeks of summer my family had gone up north, just like we always do. And i had a two week-long fling with Jamie, just as I always do. He was wonderful, but lived hundreds of miles away, too far to date. The way our personalities, senses of humor, and height ratios matched up, it almost made me want to make it work throughout the school year. But long distance is a bitch and we went our separate ways when we well, literally traveled back our separate ways.
"Kamryn, I'm gonna miss you. I just can't see this working out in the long run. If you ever want to talk, just call." I still remember him waving to me as his family's van drove away.
It wasn't hard to move on. I've had my fair share of painful breakups and this didn't seem all that bad. After that I had decided not to date any boys my junior year and that my grades were priority number one. It's not that I'm a slut or that girl that always needs to have a boyfriend. I'm a virgin, actually, and if that makes me a tease or a prude, so be it.
A week after we had gotten back from up north, I had started school. I remember exactly how the first day went down...
"Kam! Oh my goodness! You fucking grew again!" My short best friend, Caylee said sarcastically.
"I saw you yesterday." I retorted. "But yeah, it looks like you shrank." She flipped me off and laughed as we walked to set up our new lockers. "112 and 113. God I love being an upperclassmen." The past two years Caylee and I had lockers on the 4th floor, but now that we were moving up in the hierarchy of high school we no longer had to go up three flights of stairs just to get our shit every morning.
We put our brand new binders and folders in our lockers and headed to the audutorium for the junior class meeting.
"JIM!" I shouted across the front lawn at my best guy friend.
"Holy shit, it's really you!" He yelled as he sprinted to give me a hug. He had spent all summer in California with his family, so I hadn't seen him since June. He spun me around in a hug a few times before he set me down. "Hey, I'm gonna sit with some other friends during the meeting but I'll come find you guys at lunch!" He said as he hugged Caylee.
"Sounds fantastic!" I shouted after him as he went into the theater.
As we sat down in our seats I glanced to my left to see who Jim was sitting with but I had to do a double-take.
"Caylee, who's that." I quickly whispered.
"Oh um that's Niall. He moved here from a school in the north shore and people say before that he lived in Ireland." She responded.
"How do you know these things." I laughed.
"Well, when you actually stay in town over break you learn stuff." Caylee said and I jokingly punched her. She was always making jokes about how I'm always gone over summer.
"Ugh he's cute. But he's from the north shore so he's probably a rich prick." I groaned.
"Probably." She answered.
I looked over one more time, happened to catch his piercing blue eyes glancing over in my direction and we held eye contact for a fraction of a second.
I knew he was most likely stuck up but I couldn't help but steal glances of him throughout the class meeting. Forget the promise I had made to stay away from boys earlier this year, this was the beginning of something.
