Gemma's POV
"Gemma! Wake up sweetheart," Mom calls and I roll over in my bed. I groan and crawl out of my bed. I look out my window to see the streets covered with a thin layer of snow.
"Last day of 1st semester," I remind myself and walk to my closet. I grab a navy green tee, ripped jeans, a varsity jacket, and brown boots.
"Gemma?" Mom calls.
"I'm up Mom and almost ready," I reassure her. I brush my fiery red hair and put on the silver heart necklace my mom gave me for Christmas last year. Quickly I run into the living room and take a bite out of the toast on the counter.
"I'll be at work when you get off from school but you need to come straight home ok?" Mom orders.
"Why can't I go hang out at the mechanic shop?" I ask.
"Gemma we've been over this. You know my boss has a strict no kids rule. And he doesn't like you tinkering around with things," Mom says and I groan.
"I'm not a kid and I'm half a mechanic he'll ever be. And, it's not tinkering it's fixing," I point out and Mom pulls me into a tight hug.
"I know sweetheart, I just have to follow his rules. If I owned the shop it'd let you tinker all you want but sadly I don't," Mom tells me and holds my face in her rough hands.
"I guess I'll be here after school till you get home," I mumble and she smiles then kisses my forehead.
"Good girl. Now last day before winter break. Go take on the world," Mom says and I grab my messenger bag.
"Gemma, it's snowing out in your winter gear," Mom orders and I slip on my winter coat, hat, and gloves then leave our cozy apartment I run down the stairs and flip open our apartment door building. I walk out into the busy snowy streets of Brooklyn. The snowing has stopped but it'll start back again soon, it usually does. I make my way to my high school ready to be done with the 1st semester. I wanted to go to a normal public school but no. Long story short, my grandparents left my mom all their money to get us a nice home and to send to a nice school. The problem is the nice school is filled with snotty brats who only care about appearance and money, nothing else. I just want to be done with that place at least for the two week break. I'm an outcast there, their hobbies are spending their parent's money mine is mechanics and engineering. Once I arrive I make my way to my locker and put up my winter wear then walk to my 1st exam of the day. After I've finished my last exam, my teacher let me go to the library. I needed a quiet place to tinker. The library seems to be deserted only the librarian is in there. I sit down at on if the empty tables and spill out my bag of tricks.
"What to work on?" I mumble and pick up a small engine enough to power a mini toy car.
"Let's see seems like something is wrong in the engine area," I mumble and grab a Phillip's head screwdriver to take off the back and inspect the engine. Soon I start cleaning the parts and putting it back together.
"Much better," I say and put I back into my bag.
"Hey pretty girl," a boy with black hair says sitting in front of me.
"Who are you?" I say and slip my pocket knife out of my pocket.
"Lance remember," he says and I think back and then shake my head.
"What do you want?" I ask and see his eyes sparkle with electricity.
"Gemma I just want you to come with me," he says and reaches his hand out to me but I back up.
"H-how do you know my name?" I ask still backing up.
"Oh poor little Gemma. So defenseless, don't worry this won't hurt a bit," the boy says and smoky wings pop out and he rises. I open the knife part of my pocket knife and throw it at him but he dodges it.
"Half-Blood thinks she's so clever," He taunts and I back up into the next table.
"Half-Blood?" I ask.
"So young and confused. To bad I have to kill you," he spits and my eyes widen and I dive underneath the table just as he shoots a lightning bolt where I stood.
"So I die at the hands of some weird guy who's probably doing drugs. Great," I mutter and quickly crawl to the next table.
"Come out come out wherever you are," he taunts.
"Help! Anyone!" I shout and hear the library door open.
"Stop right now!" A guy's voice shouts and I see the thing has turned his attention to someone else.
"More Half-Bloods? I don't see why I shouldn't kill three in one day. Gemma was my target but two more half-blood wouldn't hurt," the thing calls and I slowly crawl out from underneath the table.
"You're going down storm spirit!" A girl's voice shouts and I see the two fighting the supposed storm spirit. They keep fighting the storm spirit and I see them getting tired.
"Take on the world. Hopefully they get the hint," I mumble and then shout," Hey storm spirit over here!" I nod to the girl and she nods back. The storm spirit dives down at me as the girl throws me a sword and I quickly stab the storm spirit right where the heart should be. The storm spirit crumbles to dust-like substance on the library floor and I get up.
"You need to come with us," the girl orders.
"That thing told me that too. I need answers," I say standing my ground.
"It's the fair thing to do Julia," the brunette boy says and the blonde girl shrugs. I analyze the boy and girl. The boy had chocolate brown hair, beautiful ever changing eyes, perfect tan skin, and he's at least half a foot taller than me. The girl had sandy blonde hair, piercing icy blue eyes, a sprinkle of freckles, and she a bit taller than me.
"So?" I ask them.
"That thing was a storm spirit he's a monster. Monsters attack our kind. And by our kind I mean you're a demi-god also known as half blood. That means one of your parents is a Greek god or goddess. And we are here to take you to Camp Half-Blood, a safe place for our kind," the boy explains and my brain overloads. It too much to handle then I black out.
