It was that bad.
The ball hit me in the back of my head at least ten times. It almost hit me in the face at one point, but Lucas, the one they call Hoops, caught it a mere six inches or so from my nose.
By the time the game was over, I had grass stains on my jeans, and my hands were throbbing from the ball smacking my palms when I caught it...Once...
I collapsed into the grass, breathing heavily, praying my asthma wouldn't me a problem again.
I hadn't had an attack since I was six years old, but still, the possibility was there.
As I sat there, gasping like a fish out of water, Nolan dug through his backpack and produced a water bottle.
"Well, you certainly proved me wrong."
He said, passing me that water.
I graciously accepted, and took a refreshing swig.
"Sorry.... I ruined.... your game.... told you.... I.... was bad...."
I panted. To my bewilderment, Nolan bore a grin, his green eyes sparkling with delight.
"Are you kidding? That was the most fun I've ever had playing football."
He said, gesturing to the water, indicating I should drink some more.
"Really?"
I was baffled as I took another gulp.
"Yeah, it was fun. It was different. I really like hanging out with you, Calypso."
He said, bumping my shoulder with his.
I blushed, nervously fiddling with my hair.
"You're so cute, oh my god."
He laughed, noticing my pink cheeks.
My face flushed even more.
"Shut up, no I'm not."
I said, trying to to cover my face with my hair.
The other boys stood a few feet away, chatting about the game.
"Yes you are, don't even play."
Nolan said, brushing my hair from my face. I drew back. Since my dad died, the only person I ever allowed to do that was Jasper, but that's just because he's been there since day one.
If Nolan noticed my sudden drawback, he didn't say anything of it.
"Hey, if you're interested, I'm having a party tomorrow night. You can bring some friends if you want, but no more than three please."
Nolan Hudson just invited me to a party.
Nolan freaking Hudson just invited me to a party.
"Uhh... I have to ask, but sure. I'd love to. What's the address?"
Nolan smirked.
"I'll text it to you. What's your number?"
This kid was trying to be slick.
Okay, I can play that game.
"Got a pen?"
I said, smirking right back.
As he searched for something to write with, the bell rang.
"Ooh, I have class. Rain check?"
I winked and grabbed my stuff and hurried to my next class, leaving Nolan Hudson sitting by himself in the grass.
