Fifteen Days With Beauty And The Beach

Chapter 2

“Maximizing your closet space again? Or you’re going to slither out elsewhere?”

I got startled and turned to face the door. Blair, my older sister was leaning against my doorframe. I sighed and continued my packing. Blair walked in, her heels were clicking against the wooden floor.

“Where are you going? What happened back at Dad’s office?” Blair huffed, then she lied down at my bed. I gave her the ‘do-you-really-want-to-know’ look and she nodded.

“Why do I have to be dad’s favourite?  It sucks Blair.”

“Well, my dear sister ... If you were in my shoes, I’d totally envy you. Look at me! I’m considered as the rebellious daughter in our family. Dad just loves you so much that he pushes you around. He just wants the best for you. Being pregnant at eighteen and be kicked out from our house by dad? It’s a good thing I’m still alive.” Blair explained then I tilted my head up high, trying to stop the tears.

“But you’re happy. You’re free. I’m not.” I said, and then Blair pulled my hand and she entwined it with hers.

“Don’t be mad at dad, sweetheart. Just try and understand him. Or do you want to end up getting kicked out too?” She explained, her eyes were sad too. But I shook it off. “If you’re still going to slither out from being the next CEO again, then don’t bother to leave.” I scowled at her.

“No way, you don’t understand why I’m leaving this time.” Blair only chuckled at me and she shook her head. I groaned and looked directly into her eyes. “Blair Callaway, do you agree that your little sister is to be married to a stranger?”

My sister’s eyes squinted and her eyebrows knitted together. “And I mean by stranger, particularly to our father’s associate’s son.” I continued.

Blair’s eyes widened, my head nodded in approval. “There’s no way you’re going to get married to someone you don’t know. That’s sick! The guy could be a pedophile of something. That bastard!” I chuckled a bit at her reaction then she raced to my closet and took out some of my clothes.

“Where are you going? I’m helping you pack.” She said and I laughed.

“You just called dad a ‘bastard’.” She looked up at me, and placed my blue tank top on the suitcase. She just gave me a dull look and raised her eyebrow for a moment, waiting for my answer. “Hawaii. Do you want to come? I’d call Marie to get you a ticket too.” I offered, but then Blair stopped folding some blouses of mine. She looked up at me, and she had those sad eyes again. After a few hesitations, she shook her head.

“Why not, Blair?” I asked, my tone was a mixture of defeat and worry.

“I can’t leave Cassey. Remember? Besides, I don’t have the money to pay for a ticket to Hawaii.” She answered then I tried to open my mouth to answer but I closed it again. My face seemed to light up and a light bulb appeared above me, its light was so bright.

“You don’t need to pay anything. C’mon, we’ll call Robin and Cheka. You know they’d love to take Cassey over for a few days.” I smiled, and then Blair smiled back. “So what?” I raised my eyebrow at her.

“I don’t know ....” She mused and I sighed.

“Come on Blair. It’s been so long since you relaxed and besides, we don’t have any time together for years. Oh and ... If you stay here, the bigger possibility dad will know you still keep on visiting me here.” I smirked.

“Fine, I’ll go.” Blair finally agreed and I squealed in delight.

By the time I finished packing, I placed my luggage at my car’s back compartment the Blair agreed I’d stay for the night at her apartment with Cassey.

Blair’s apartment was a thirty-minute drive away from the office, and an hour drive away from our house. It was an old dirty cream coloured building and Blair’s unit was on the ninth floor.

“This is highly unlikely to our house alright? Don’t get your hopes too high.” Blair warned as she unlocked the door with the key from her front jeans pocket. I genuinely smiled and she gave me an apologetic look.

She opened the door to her unit and I felt pity for my older sister.  Her house wasn’t bigger than my room but it had another door leading to the bathroom and another one for a bedroom. We entered the place and I spotted a teenager.

“Hey Tiffany, thanks again. By the way this is my sister, Diana.” Tiffany smiled at me and I waved a hand at her. She collected her things and headed for the door while Blair and I sat down on the couch.

“Oh, Blair?” Tiffany called out before she left the room.

“What is it, Tiff?” Blair stood up from the couch and came near the young girl. Tiffany whispered something to Blair then she frowned. “Could I just give it to you next time?” I spotted Blair inserting her hand in her pockets and came out with nothing.

“How much is it?” I stood up from the couch as well and took my purse with me. I stood beside Blair and she took hold of my hand.

“You don’t need to.” Blair stopped me and I shook my head.

“How much is it?” I ignored her protest and asked Tiffany with a smile.

“Forty dollars. Twenty a day.”

I nodded and took out fifty dollars for my wallet. “Here’s a little something. Call it gratitude for taking care of my niece nice and well.” Tiffany took the money and thanked us, and then she fled the room.

“How come you care to visit me almost every afternoon yet someone else is watching over your daughter?”  I asked. Before she could answer, I stopped her. “I understand if you can’t visit. It’s better to take care of Cassey instead of seeing me.” I said and we sat down on the couch again.

“I work on a cafe as a busgirl downtown. So, I have time to see you. Cassey doesn’t mind that I’m not the one who fetches her from school since Tiffany is from the same school. Besides, every afternoon, Tiffany tutors her.”

“Oh, I see. Well, I told you I should’ve bought you the house a few blocks away from our house. Look at this place. It’s not a good place for Cassey to grow up. And it’s a burden to you because you pay rent to this. Besides, I still have Cassey’s savings that Robin and I made for her.” I smiled and she nodded.

A knock on the door was heard and Blair opened it.

Robin and Cheka stood in front of Blair and I stood up in surprise. “Big brother!” I beamed and I raced to Robin. He hugged me back and once we separated, both of us asked each other the same question. “What are you doing here?”

I chuckled and Cheka answered for Robin. “We were supposed to surprise Blair and Cassey with dinner!” Cheka lifted the woven picnic basket and I hugged both of them.

“I missed you guys, a lot!” I gleefully said, which made my two older siblings and my sister-in-law laugh.

“I suggest we settle this with dinner.” Cheka suggested and we agreed to her idea.
