Samantha was one of the richest kids at school. This wasn't saying much, however.
She also didn't like to talk about how she got the money.
Samantha grew up in a small house with her parents and her little sister, Flick. Until one day, when Samantha was ten, her father passed away. Her mother was making less money, without a husband to help. It stank, but that was how things went. Then, when Samantha was fourteen, her mother died as a result of starvation and exhaustion. Flick and Samantha were scared, but they stayed in the house, since their mother had left them seeds to plant fruits and vegetables with.
So Flick and Samantha grew their own food, and for a few weeks, were pretty content. However, they did not know that growing your own food was illegal. You could buy it from government-approved stores, and that was it.
So the two girls were poor. And soon, they were homeless. They wandered around the city, begging. But people turned their noses at the destitute girls. Until...
Samantha was trying to talk a plump man with a bucket of apples into giving her some. He would not give her the apples, but he had a more sinister offer. Leaving Flick behind, Samantha followed the man into a little house. The only other people were other men. They gave Samantha a bad feeling, but why she couldn't say. The man told her that she was beautiful, an asset to the line of work they did.
This was the last time in Samantha's life that she felt safe.
