"Hello Gracie, nice to see you again, how are you coping?" The doctor asks me.
"Alright," I shrugged, "They're still here."
"Do they talk to you?"
"Yes"
"Is it getting better?"
"No"
"Worse?"
I nodded.
Scratching her head, she looked down at the papers in her hand before writing some notes.
"Hey cutie," A voice startled me out of my daydream. Sitting next to me on the couch was Josh. I try to ignore him. He's not really there. Just a figment of my imagination.
"What exactly do they talk to you about?" The doctors attention was back on me.
"All the ordinary stuff," i told her.
"Ordinary stuff?"
"Yeah, like a normal conversation," between normal people. I didn't say that last part. I'm used to being called weird, especially when people catch me talking to thin air.
"I see," she jotted down a few more notes.
I look over to the window and see Taylor fixing her hair in the glass.
Look away Gracie, there's no one there.
"And its still the same ones?" The doctor asked
"Yes."
More pen to paper.
I could feel josh playing with a strand of my hair, still next to me. Taylor was sitting on the doctors desk, swinging her legs like a child and now Bayden was sitting in the corner, reading one of the books that he'd pulled down from the shelf.
I was going mad.
"Now Gracie," the doctor said, "You know they're not real, right?"
The three of them looked shocked.
"Yes, i know." At least, that's what i try to tell myself. Somewhere in the back of my head, i know they're not just my imagination. They live, they breathe, just like me.
I don't tell that to the doctor. I don't want to be sent away to some looney house, where they lock you up and talk to you like babies.
I'll just do what i've been doing for the past seventeen years.
Ignore them, and maybe, just maybe, they'll leave you in peace for a few minutes.
~~~~~~~~~~
"Ouch! Stop it!" Tayla screamed, flinching away from Bayden. He pinched her again.
"Gracieee! Make him stop!"
I was sitting there, with my fingers in my ears thinking 'la la la la la la'.
The doctors appointment didn't go too well. After trying to ignore my imaginary trio for ten minutes, i snapped and started yelling at nothing, making a fool for myself and completely erasing all the sanity points i've gained.
Josh was sitting on the end of my bed munching on a bag of chips that was meant to be for me.
"Ya know Gracie," He said with a full mouth, "You should really start talking to us again."
"Why would she want to talk to us when she's got that fancy doctor who reckons we don't exist," bitched Tayla
Covering my ears with the palms of my hands, i squeezed my eyes tight and held my breath, as if trying to block out all of my sences.
It didnt work. I knew they were still there. Watching me, haunting me.
Eventually, i give up and take a peek and to my surprise, they were gone. The only evidence that they exist, was a half eaten bag of chips at the end of my bed. I triumphantly claimed my prize. At least what's left of it.
