What did we do to deserve this fate?

How could we have known that hideous monsters were true and we were mere playthings waiting to be captured and toyed with?

I could barely see the hideous beast that stood before me due to my blurred vision. Tears continued to flow down my dirtied face as I tried my best to choke back the loud sobs that threatened to spill out of my mouth. If I made one sound, that beast that now toward above my dead husband will surely devour me. I looked down at my husband and began to gag in disgust while sobbing into my hands. My husband lay in a pool of his own blood. His face was caved in due to the gigantic, dog-like creature stepping on him while he was trying to save me. He was almost there to the goal. He could've won; this is all my fault! I should have kept running when the monster first appeared but I was so tired. Now, due to my own selfishness, my dear husband is dead.

I watched the beast with fear. I couldn't- no- I wouldn't be able to describe this beast with mere words. This horrid four-legged creature with leathery, dark skin and sharp claws. This beast had powerful jaws that unhinge at will; it could easily swallow me whole!

Speaking of unhinging....

The beast, with its heavy sounding footsteps, stood above my barely recognizable husband with hunger in its lidless, murky green eyes. The crowd that surrounded the stage began to cheer. A few words were audible to me. Those words were: Eat him, Dismantle him, Blood, Blood, Blood.

The crowd's cheers elevated as the beast unhinged its mighty jaws. They marveled at its rows upon rows of razor sharp teeth stained a disgustingly dark yellow. Ooh's and Ahh's could be heard distinctly as the beast's long and agile tongue, flickered out of its gaping mouth in order to lick the blood trail that my love, my one and only, was leaving.

What could I do?

What could I possibly do to this nightmarish monster? I could only cower, snivel, and quiver like a leaf hanging onto a branch for dear life. The beast lowered itself on its front legs, scooping up a portion of my husband's body into its mouth. The crowd's roar reached new heights; I could feel the bloodlust coming from them as they continued to cheer for the beast. Wagging it's long, fish-like tail in response to the praises that it was receiving, it snapped its powerful jaws back in place while effectively crushing most of my husband's body. What was left of my husband was his left arm. I could tell this due to his wedding ring -that he wore on his left hand- which shone brightly despite the blood covering every inch of his severed limb. A sickening 'crunching' and 'squelching' could be heard coming from the beast's blood covered mouth as it enjoyed its 'meal' thoroughly. Its predator's eyes watched me as I eased my sobbing form over towards the last remains of my love.

I didn't care anymore if that thing ate me! I will never be the same after this devilish game ends! The last piece of sanity, as well as my old life, was now being eaten by that monster! I cradled the severed limb close, ignoring the blood and the crowds mocking laughter and cheers for more. I focused on my terror, anger, and heart-wrenching sobs that wracked my body. Loud thuds could be heard from the beast who began to slowly make its way to my figure; I stayed put and continued to cry on and on.

Suddenly, chains shot up from openings within the platform and firmly wrapped around the now agitated creature. It began to squirm and roar, determine to reach for its last helpless prey with its long claws. The chains did not budge, rather, they began to yank the creature back. The creature let out a strange gurgle of protest while trying to scratch its way towards me. I ignored it as it was dragged into the darkness that separated the raised arena from the crowd.

"We have our winner!" My arm was harshly tugged upwards along with my body. I now stood facing the crowd. I was not the favorite toy to these repulsive bastards and seeing me win must have made them upset. I should have died and preventing me from dying takes the amusement away from the crowd which would surely make for upset customers. As the 'Host' of this game show stated to all the contestants before the show commenced,

"We will never allow an upset crowd! Make sure you put on your best show!"

A lump formed in my throat as I felt countless eyes calculate me.  A woman: matted tangled blonde hair covering my tear streaked, blood stained face, mouth set in a frown, clothes tattered and blood stained, and holding onto a limb for dear life. I was a sight to see.

I looked and felt like a mess and the Host who continued to hold up my arm  (which was causing musk to perfume his face, sorry-not-sorry) knew it too since his Chesire like smile grew wider. The crowd's hushed whispers filled the air; I could tell they were upset about me winning. Throughout the game, I gave no entertainment; I was not in their favor, unlike my husband who the crowd adored yet were ecstatic to see his demise.

The servant of the 'Keeper', rushed onto the stage towards the Host. His stitches that adorned the upper portion of his lips, stretched as he sent a sadistic smile my way. Every set of eyes watched him with eager anticipation as to what the Keeper might have wanted and/or said. His eyes, however, to me said it all as he whispered into the Host's ear while staring directly at me with his silver sharp eyes. Standing back- and now clutching my arm in a vise-like grip- the Host smiled coldly towards me before turning to the crowd and announcing,

"It seems as if there has been an error-"

Oh God no...

"-this maiden is not the winner. Due to popular demand and our wonderful Keeper, we have no winner this season!" Once again, the crowd laughed mockingly and cheered gleefully at the turn of events. My legs started to quiver as I started to hyperventilate.

Oh God please no!

"However!"

The crowd was once again silenced.

"This lucky woman will remain here as a contested in our games for as long as she deems fit!" I cried out as I was suddenly snatched back by chains causing me to drop my husband's arm in shock. Sobbing once again, I pleaded for release but was drowned out by the crowd's obnoxious laughter and cheers for more. Like the beast, I was dragged into the darkness, fearing for the future and begging to stay in the light's warm embrace. My pleas were ignored as I was swallowed into the darkness with my only hope for freedom being ripped away from me.

"That's it for now, folks! See you next time on,

Survival of the Bloody Fittest!"
