Unforgettable (A Softball Story)

The Beginning

Jaki POV
I placed my feet on the mound, my heart racing. I glanced at my first baseman and best friend, Emmeline Thomas. Emmeline gave me a reassuring nod. I turned to look at my batter, possibly the largest 12 year old ever, Diane Denis. Diane was the best hitter in the league, and the biggest bully in school. I shook myself back to reality. I did my arm circle and let go. I let go of my fears and my worries and put everything in my pitch.

And Diane smashed it.

I turned around as the other teams bleacher started screaming. I watched the ball fly through the air and over the fence. Well, grand slam and the Kangaroos win. Again. The seventh time to be exact.

In the dugout, Emmeline came up to me. "Jaki, you pitched great! It was just her pitch." I sighed."I know Emmeline, but 'her pitch' cost us the game! This loss is my fault, not the Fire-Breathing Gummy Bears fault." Georgia walked up. "You are an AMAZING pitcher. She's just an amazing hitter! Besides, just because she's like 8 feet tall doesn't mean you're not the best pitcher I know." I cracked a smile "Thanks Georgia." Georgia is very petite but she's a bundle of joy.

My catcher Megan Ortinez walked up and playfully slapped me on the back. I winced. There would be a decent bruise there. It wasn't Megan's fault, she's just really tall. Everyone on the team is basically the same height, and then Megan looms over everyone, even the coaches. "What's up J-Dog?"  I sigh. "Oh nothing I'm just considering the meaning of life while I mourn our loss." "Jaki Norisson!" Megan gave me a disapproving look. "You did fine! Do not get down on yourself." "Hey Megan? What was the score." Megan made a gagging sound. "It was-"

"It was 8-4!" Diane and her friends laughed like hyenas. Diane smirked. "Little Miss Pitcher. You will NEVER strike out the great Diane Denis." She flexed. I could felt color rush up my face as I screamed, "I WILL STRIKE YOU OUT! DO NOT DOUBT ME!" I was steaming mad. Megan stood up. "I swear Denis I will KILL you if you touch my friend or if you say ANYTHING to her. You will regret it." Her voice was steely calm and as sharp as a razor." Diane backed up a little. "Whatever Ortinez." "Thanks Megan. I just hate how she picks on everyone." I glared at Diane as she walked to the Kangaroo dugout. "No problemo J-Dog." Megan rubbed my back and I fell asleep in her lap.

The next day at school...

Diane POV
"Hey people of Wells Middle School! The Kangaroos beat the Fire-Breathing Gummy Bears 15-4 yesterday!" I heard grunts and whispers from around me. "And, the cause of their defeat was the little Jaki Norisson. She pitched a strike, but I hit it over the fence for a grand slam. So she was the cause of defeat." I watched Jaki back out of the crowd slowly. She snapped her fingers and her best friends -or partners in crime- Heidi Long and Tiffany Badger grabbed her and pulled her to me. "Hello pitcher girl. Fastball? More like failball!" I heard people laugh and snicker. "What are you going to say to the all-star Diane Denis?"

Jaki POV
Diane had the nerve to insult me. I had the nerve to smack her. It was a bright red mark across her face. People around us gasped. She sneered. "Suggesting your pitching is so bad, I didn't know you had such good aim." She pulled the collar of my shirt and said quietly, "Listen Norisson that was risky. I won't be so forgiving next time." She raised her head slightly then Heidi and Tiffany dropped me on the ground.

Georgia and Emmeline ran up. Emmeline had tears in her eyes, and Georgia was straight out crying. Georgia faced Diane. "How could you! You monster! What makes you think you can come and hit my friend! YOU WILL PAY!!! The Fire-Breathing Gummy Bears will teach you a lesson." I was shocked. I had never seen Georgia so mad before. I stood up and hugged her. "I'm okay. She will get what she deserves."

Megan POV
I AM GOING TO KILL DIANE.
