The next day was probably the worst I've had in a while. Well, definitely the winner for this year's worst days.

I woke up as usual, found the note on the counter that said 'be back late, love you! -mom and dad', walked to school weary of that satanic dog, and then I was surprised to see that Marcus wasn't at his usual spot.

Oh no.

What happened? Did he and his father have it out after I left? Did his father kill him? I began to feel sick to my stomach, but I started running. My only hope was that Marcus had left before me.

It didn't take much longer to get there, but I was still breathing uncontrollably, due to the fact that Marcus could be dead this very second.

The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to cry. Why didn't I stay? Why didn't I help him?

However, something caught my eye, Marcus was sitting no more that twenty feet from me.

"Marcus!" I yelled excitedly.

He turned and I saw that he was wearing sunglasses. Probably to hide a black eye. Now that I think about it, he has worn them quite a few times before.

My intentions were to run to him and hug him. But, when I got to him, he showed no interest in me whatsoever.

"Marcus?" I asked.

"What?" He said.

"Listen, are you mad at me for last night? I'm so sorry, I know I should've helped you-"

"No. You did the right thing. I wanted you to leave."

I thought about that for a minute.

"Then, what's wrong?" I asked.

"Dakota, I really just don't think it'll work out. Us, being friends." He says.

I think I felt my heart snap.

"What do you mean?"

He sighed. "Sorry. It's just how I feel." He said.

"But-" I was interrupted by Kayla joining our conversation, well, more like pushing Marcus out of the way so she could talk to me.

"Oh my god, Dakota!" She squealed.

"What?"

"I so heard you're back together with Adam!"

I quickly looked at Marcus, and he gave me a look of absolute betrayal.

I quickly pushed her aside and ran after Marcus who was swiftly walking away.

"Wait, it's not what it sounds like! He probably just made up that rumor!" I said.

"Really? Then why don't you tell me what happened?"

"Okay, so after I ran away last night, I was sitting in the road and he almost ran over me. And so I got in his car and we talked for a little while and that's it! I swear!"

"Even if I did believe you, it's done. Sorry, I just don't want to be friends anymore."

He walked away. But this time, I didn't run after him.
