it's about seven thirty at night and i am contemplating whether i should find a new show on netflix to watch, or maybe even organize my room. it's the first night of summer break and i am already bored out of my mind. i decide to do a bit of both, so i quickly make my bed and clear off my desk. i throw away any garbage from off the floor, and vacuum the carpet. once i'm satisfied with my work, i change into my sweatpants and put on an old, oversized tee shirt. my charger for my macbook is behind my bed, so i plug it in and get comfortable underneath my white duvet. it takes a few seconds to load, but sure enough netflix opens up on the screen. to be honest, i have been into quite a few series on here, like stranger things, and the walking dead. my best friend, savannah, had suggested i watch the newest season of american horror story. i settle with that.
---
i wake up at about noon, and soon realize that i had watched the entire sixth season, so i would've had to fallen asleep at around five in the morning. it takes me a few minutes to fully wake up. i find savannah in the kitchen, making pancakes.
"morning." i mumble to her.
"pancake?" she offers.
"sure." i walk to over to our small kitchen table.
"hey margo, how late were you up last night?" she said without turning from the stovetop.
"meh. maybe four or five. i couldn't stop watching the new american horror story series."
"it's pretty good, hey?" she flips a pancake onto a plate
"yeah i liked it."
"evan peters looked sooo good as edward."
i laughed.
"good point, but he looked the best in murder house and asylum, you have to admit."
"absolutely." she carried two plates with a couple pancakes on each.
we sat there for about fifteen minutes, eating and talking about evan peters. savannah had to leave soon after, as she works weekends at the local coffee house down the street. i washed the dishes and went back to my room to find an outfit for the day. i throw on my high waisted american apparel shorts, with my favourite black thrasher shirt. i do my makeup very lightly, as i'm not planning to do much today. everyone has told me that my dark brown hair really contrasts with my bright hazel eyes, making them pop.
i get my dark hair from my dad's side. he was born and raised in southern brazil. my mom, is caucasian and was raised in northern california. they both met in santa cruz, when my dad and his buddies from college took a trip to the golden state looking for an "american girl". my mom, just so happened to be in santa cruz on a day trip with her best friends. my dad says he fell in love with her the moment he laid his eyes on her. my mom says he has always been the corniest romantic she had ever met. once my dad made it back to his hometown, they began exchanging letters. they visited each other about every month or so, and within two years they were engaged. my dad moved in with my mom in and they settled down in a suburban neighbourhood in anaheim, california. which is about an hour or so from los angeles, where i live now.
savannah has been my best friend since i was three. my mom was friends with her co-worker named ashley, and ashley happened to live a block away from our house. ashley had savannah a little over a year before i was born. ever since then, fast forward sixteen years, we have been best friends. we both decided to move in together in a really small, yet cozy, two bedroom apartment in los angeles. she is in university right now, but i'm not quite there yet. i have a job at a nike outlet just a few blocks away. since neither of us own a vehicle, we just walk or bus. it gets really quiet when savannah isn't around, she has always been the louder one.
once i feel that i am satisfied with my look, i slip on my all white vans, and grab my denim backpack and throw it over my shoulder.
i lock our apartment door, and run down the two flights of stairs, skipping a step as i go.
outside is the typical los angeles weather. hot, humid, and a bit of moisture from the ocean. i catch a bus at the corner of my street and it takes me to the local target, which only takes a few minutes. savannah had written me a short grocery list of necessities for the week.
the list consisted of:
-bag of bagels
-milk
-greek yogurt
-tampons
-fruiti walked to the dairy section first, and grab a carton of milk and set it into a red basket. next i grab the greek yogurt. it's pomegranate raspberry, savannah's absolute favourite. the fruit and vegetable aisle is just around the corner, so i head there next. i grab some strawberries, blueberries, apples, and bananas. we both share the love for fresh fruit. finally i grab the bagels and tampons, and head to the cashier. the line was surprisingly short for a target in los angeles. i pay with cash, and carry the three bags to the bus stop where i had gotten off.
---
later that night, i cooked a few chicken breasts and rice while i waiting for savannah to get home. it was only about five thirty, and she usually gets back closer to six. i placed a couple plates on our table, and savannah walks in the door.
"hey." i say with a mouthful of chicken.
"hey," she replies. "do you remember marcus from high school?"
i stop eating for a second.
"yeah i do," i brush my hair out of my face. "what about him?"
"well he's having a party tonight, and i was wondering if you wanted to go?"
"mehhhhh-"
"come on. it'll be fun."
"i don't know."
"pleeeeease?" she begged.
"okay," i hesitated. "fine."
"okay cool. we better get ready soon."
"after we finish eating, come on, your chicken is cold."
