Chapter 3

I yawn as I put on my apron and put up my hair, it's been a long day already and it's about to get longer.
Unfortunately by the time I got to my dishwashing station there was already a huge pile of plates and other dishes stacked pretty high. Yup that's right I'm a dishwasher. At Perkins. It doesn't get much more glamorous than this.

"Hey darlin' " a sweet southern accent interrupting my thoughts drawled "sorry the boys already have you booked I don't know how you manage. Sweet thing"

I turn around to face probably my favorite person on this earth. Her redish-brown hair was up in a ponytail with many strands poking out and her bangs in her iconc straight across her forehead, she couldn't look any more welcoming.  "Hey Marge, how are you?"

"Well I was good 'till I seen what those boys left for you. I awt to.... well I don't know but I should do somethin'. Oh I know let me help you until you get back up to sched-"

I cut her off from her rambling "Marge thank you but we both know I can manage, and plus those customers need you to wait on them"  she might be my only friend but if you get her talking even I can get sick of her.

"OH right I gotta go dear, see if anyone needs a refill" she went off through the swinging kitchen doors pulling her pad and pencil out.

I immediately got to work placing somethings into the super-fast dishwasher and handwashing other things so there wouldn't be a shortage. I caught up fairly quickly because it's a Tuesday afternoon and not many people are really here.
Despite it being work, right here in this dishwashing station might be my favorite place.

"Hey Maison, hurry up!" one of the fat cooks that couldn't see me barked at me.

I decide to ignore him and reflect on today's events, specifically everything with Luke. 1st- He stole my Chemistry book. The book that all the teachers warn cost hundreds of dollars and if you don't return it that they will fine you. What am I going to do about that? I could ask for it back and make a fool of myself when he says no. Nope. I could take one of the extras. Nope. I could find his book and take that one back. Yep-o.
I decide to tell Marge what happened today because I always have to tell her everything. After me saying 'Marge let me finish' and 'hold on one second' and 'Ma'am please hold all questions to the end' through the story I finally finished.

"Wait why was he kicking your chair?" She looks as me puzzled. "OH I HAVE IT I HAVE IT" Literally she was jumping around like a maniac "He likes you he likes you"

"MARGE!" I whisper-scream to her "he does not like me, he was just trying to bug me and you look like you're 5 calm down" I parent her even though she is maybe 50 years older than me. How ironic. "And even if he did he is just some jerk I don't care about and that doesn't have any feelings. Now that's not the point Marge focus on the textbook"

She just gaped at me. Then blinked. Then blinked again while I stood there trying to remain calm and taking deep breaths.

"you like him too " she barley breathed out.

"Oh my goodness you sound like your 4 Marge will you stop it?" I hissed back at her quickly, and started feriously washing a plate much harder than need be.

"HEY MAISON, My BFFL! wanna come to my b-day party? It's on Saturday! It's going to be sooooo fun. The theme is pink so wear something pink and here is the invitation! Oh my gosh I am sooo glad you're comming!!" All of this was squeaked by a very small, very annoying, girl named Hannah.

One part of me was very happy seeing her, and that was because she was the dishwasher for the next shift and I could leave this awkward conversation with Marge for another time. But then another part of me saw Hannah and that part of me wanted to crawl into a hole and hide.

"Hi Hannah, yeah I'll see if I can go. Thanks." I said with the most enthusiasm as possible but with the look on Marge's face it wasn't much.

"OH GOODIE GOODIE GOODIE!! I am sooooo glad you can come" she yelped and tried to give me a hug.

I successfully dodged to the hug and took off my apron quickly.

"Well I'm glad your here Hannah, but I actually have to go" I explained while grabbing the invite from her hand and grabbing my coat from a nearby chair. "Seeya later Marge!" And saluted her just because I knew it bugged her.
So I could have said no I can't go to the her birthday party but here's the thing. Her dad is the owner of that particular Perkins and she happens to be his only child. So if I keep her happy, then she keeps him happy then he is in a good mood and he doesn't fire me or whatever.
But man is she hard to handle. Hannah isn't even supposed to be working there yet because she is only 15. Yet here she is thanks to Daddy Dearest.

I hop into my truck and take a deep breath..  and realize how freezing it is Brrrr. Quickly I turn on the car and pull out of the Perkins. Peeking at the clock I see its already 8 that's 5 hours in on the clock, not too bad. I have been saving for a while and I start daydreaming about what I should do with the money. Maybe I should buy a dog. How much do houses cost? I'm only 17 what am I thinking. Maybe I need the money for that stupid textbook.

I'm so deep in thought I don't notice the car in the other lane skid on ice into my lane.
