The Ferry.

I am just a normal girl, nothing really special... except that I'm the only one wanting to go on a ferry in the foggy weather to study marine biology. So of course, I decided to go on a ferry in P.E.I to study the amazing fishes there.

I was so excited, my body tingled with fear and excitement, even though I wanted to be a marine biologist I've never been on a boat before... never.

As I walked on deck to the boat, I felt excitement. My dream was finally going to come true. I will soon be a marine biologist. I've never thought of anything else I wanted to be. My mom was someone who loved the ocean and the water, my dad... well, I've never met my dad. He left my mom and me when I was so little, I couldn't even remember how old I was back then. But mom never got to do what she loved. Now she is a woman working at a fast food company, her clothes always greasy after she comes back from work -

"YOU HERE FOR THE BOAT?" Someone from behind me yelled over the noise of the waves hitting the bottom of the deck.

I jumped as I heard the voice come from behind me.

"Oh... uhhh... yeah, um the ferry? Is this it?" I pointed to the rusty pale blue boat in front of me.

The boat did not look like a boat that could even function, it was rusty, full of mold, and spider webs hanging down from the handle rails. But it was better than nothing... I guess.

"Who's she?" Someone emerged from the dark doorway of the boat.

"Hi, I'm Emily Willia-" I was cut of by the man standing beside me.

"Her name's Emily... Williams was it?" He sounds bored... unamused.

"Yeah..." I replied.

"OH... welcome to THE MERMAID HUNTER!" The boy at the doorway said, making a gesture with his hands.

"Do you think mermaids actually exist?" I raised my eyebrows.

"NO! Why... oh, my dad named this boat, the name just sticked." The boy said.

"Okay then." I replied, not believing him.

"Come on in then, we haven't got all the time in the world." He said sarcastically.

The man beside me shooed me in. I suddenly noticed that the boy has a scar running down his eyebrow. It wasn't that big though, but it was noticeable. I was going to ask him what happened... but I thought that was a tad bit too rude. I decided that I'll wait for him to bring the topic up.

"You don't have to stand here the whole time, you know? There is an outside part, too. It looks over to the sea... just... remember the handles are rusty and wobbly, so don't lean too hard... or else you'll plung into the water... and eventually..... DIE!" He yelled, scaring me half to death, I wouldn't be surprised if I had died right there.

"Right... ok. Thanks for telling me... that." I said unsurely.

As I walked away I heard him whisper quietly to himself.

"No problem..." He whispered

As I walked outside, the harsh cool breeze hit me like a punch in the face, I stepped back... until I saw something swimming elegantly in the dark blue water, it was a jellyfish. I stepped to the rails, peered over, and that's when it happened. Disaster had struck... I plunged into the freezing cold water, I had forgotten all about the wobbly, not stable rails.

"HEY! HEY! HELP... PLEASE SOMEONE! HELP ME. PLEASE! HEL-" My head was dunked under the water.

I chocked on the salty water, waving my arms around, yelling for help... to no reply. My voice was droned out by the loud roar of the boat's engine. Then... it left me stranded there in the water. Struggling to stay above the surface of the water, I paddled for my life. I spied something floating about a meter away from me. I paddled to that something, it was a soggy but okay-to-rest-on log. I grabbed it, with all my strength, I pulled myself onto it.
