00: Prologue

I tapped my pencil quietly against the paper, right hand pressed flat to my forehead as my elbow rested on the hard surface of the desk to hold my head up. I was in deep thought, but not about the questions that were laid out on the piece of paper in front of me. I was in deep thought about what was to happen the minute the bell rang and school was over; football tryouts.

It was my first year trying out for the school team, but I had been practicing since the beginning of freshmen year. I wanted to make sure I was the best when I tried out as a senior so I didn’t embarrass myself in front of the rest of the seniors. I was certain I was going to be the only senior trying out, which was embarrassing enough. I didn’t want to suck, too.

The smile on my face from thoughts of what would happen if I made it onto the team – the popularity, getting to play football every week, my mother being proud of me, no more bullying, Zayn Malik – vanished the second I laid eyes on Louis Tomlinson who I had only then realised was sitting next to me. He was staring at my test, copying my answers, and so I moved the sheet away from him, trying not to make a big deal out of it.

Louis’ eyes snapped up to me as he glared very threateningly at me. I gulped as he moved his head back over to his own desk. “What are you doing, Styles? Those are my answers!”, echoed through the room and I sighed, knowing what was coming.

“Harry, Louis, what’s going on?” Miss Thompson asked, looking up from her laptop at the two of us.

I didn’t say anything as Louis went on about how I was cheating off him. When he was done, Miss Thompson didn’t look as if she believed Louis. Her eyes flickered to me, her expression softening. I didn’t bother pretending I didn’t know I was one of her favourite students because she was one of my favourite teachers.

“Harry,” she said, voice not accusing at all. “Is that true?”

I looked over at Louis who was glaring at me again, exactly the same as before; threatening and enough to make me want to curl up in a ball and hide. I wasn’t a very strong person, which is exactly why it was so easy for the football team to pick on me. That was another major reason why I wanted to be on the team, because once I was one of them, the football team couldn’t pick on me.

But I wasn’t on the football team, and I was still the poor, defenceless Harry Styles who had to let Louis Tomlinson win. So I sighed, looked up at Miss Thompson, and nodded.

“Yeah, it’s… It’s true,” I mumbled, eyes slowly drifting down to my desk as I spoke.

I heard Miss Thompson sigh in disappointment, but I knew she wasn’t disappointed that I had cheated. She was disappointed that I didn’t tell her the truth and stand up to Louis. “I’m sorry, Harry, but I’m going to have to take your test off you and give you a zero, then.”

I nodded and handed the test to her, ignoring the quiet snicker that came from Louis.

“I’m also going to have to ask you to leave the room.” Once more I nodded and then rose to my feet, feeling my face heat up as I walked out of the room with all eyes on me.

I waited outside the room for a few minutes before getting bored, so I decided to just walk around seeing as school was nearly over.

I had just rounded a corner when I saw Mr Balinski and froze. Mr Balinski was one of the stricter teachers, and I knew I was dead meat the minute his eyes landed on me in the otherwise empty hallway.

“Styles, do you have a hall pass?” he asked, even though I was certain he already knew the answer. Of course I didn’t have a hall pass.

I shook my head and he smiled evilly, checking his watch and then looking back up at me. “Well, you have ten minutes until you need to meet me in room 5B for after school detention,” he said.

I felt my heart drop to my stomach; I was going to miss tryouts.

Author's Note:

So this is my new Zarry fic. I know this is kind of boring and short but it's only the prologue. This hasn't been edited yet so I apologise for mistakes.
