Demi's POV
I kicked the floor underneath my skateboard quickly, trying to do a big spin on the approaching sidewalk as I crossed the streets . I placed a foot on the back of the board as I got ready to hold it down and jump but I don't know what happened. When I raised my foot to the top of the board I didn't press down and fell hard, my skateboard rolling a few steps away from me. I could've hit my face but I placed hands on the floor, as if I was doing a push up, just in time. Agh. I hear rapid steps behind me as I try to get up before a hand rested on my shoulder and the other on my elbow. I look up to see a boy around my age with a worried expression; He had dark brown eyes and a sharp jawline and he looked as if helping me up was the hardest task he'd done all day. He went to grab my skateboard, handing it back to me.
"Thanks." I muttered silently, hoping he heard me because I feel too embarrassed to speak up. I looked at him carefully and recognized the boy from my sixth period class. I think his name was Jesse, maybe Jake. I don't remember very well. He was the type of guy to seat at the back and never raise his hand or draw attention to himself in class. I wouldn't describe him as shy seeing as when he was showing the class his presentation a few weeks ago he seemed quite confident. He probably only keeps to himself.
"What were you trying to do?" He asked.
"Big spin flip." I replied, tightening my ponytail.
With a thoughtful expression before he took my skateboard from me gently and glanced at me before dropping it on the floor, "May I?" When he saw me shrug he placed my skateboard on the floor and stepped up, "Watch the pro." he smirked as he got a few feet away from me before kicking my way. I watched as he placed his foot on the back of the board, jumping up as the board did it's own thing under him before his feet found the deck and fell down along with it swiftfully. He raised his hands in the air as if he just won a brawl, pounding his chest.
I clapped, laughing at him. He handed me the board and told me to get on. I did as he said. He spoke slowly in my ear, guiding me through this trick. I stared at the floor trying to imagine myself doing the trick as he spoke. "The key is gravity. Don't get all tripped up," he laughed at his corny joke and I nudged his stomach to keep him going, "If there's any time you feel like the board is too far from your feet, you don't always have to keep them bent." He continued to speak, motioning me what to do in front of me. Skateboarding has always been a hobby of mine and I never imagined getting told what to do by a total stranger. "You good?" He asked.
I nodded and he pushed my back slightly, as if I needed that boost. I wasn't that of a professional at tricks but I could go as fast as a car going forty miles per hour. I kicked the floor before hopping, turning the skateboard slightly with my toe and bringing my legs up. I brought my legs down and as he said, straightened them a bit and when I found the deck I bounced back down. I laughed, "Yes!"
He walked past me, giving me a quick fist bump, "Not bad, tight jeans." I smirked at my nickname and continued riding to school, it's like a block away, plus my knee hurt after the fall.
I got on my skateboard once I saw Alani's silver car sparkle with the sun. I rolled over to them quickly in the parking lot, Janae put up a middle finger at me and I did the same to her swiftly as I was coming to a halt.
"Hello, my subjects." I said as if I was Queen. Because I was.
"Ew, you wish." Alani said, taking the keys out of her car.
"Thanks for the ride." Some girl said, who I didn't even notice was in the back seat.
"Why did you give her a ride?" I said, leaning against the car.
"We're doing the car wash with her, why not be nice?" Janae said, leaning against me and resting her head on my shoulder. Out of all of us Janae was the most clingy, it wasn't annoying, it just had many people question my sexuality.
"Oh yeah, that's Ava?" I asked, placing a hand in her back pocket.
"Ada." Janae corrected me.
I looked back at Alani, who was picking her bags up from the floor of the back seat. Janae brought her head up from my shoulder and began to walk along with Alani.
"We're going shopping with her after school." Alani said, kicking a pebble as we walked. Everybody was chatting outside or walking towards the building since class started in about ten minutes.
"Oh, really?" I said, kind of surprised Janae gave in to someone below her class. Janae was the more fashionista out of all of us. She aspired to being a model and she wasn't as humble as you'd think she'd be. Super materialistic, she'd acquire some
new clothes every week and hated to share with her younger siblings. Ada was more on the down low, I've noticed almost all of her pants are sweat pants. Ew, as Janae would say. "That's cool.""You're getting in the car with us." Alani said, opening the glass door for us to go in.
I giggled as if mocking her, "you know how I feel about the use of vehicles. Why can't I just meet you there?"
"I don't understand why you think so low of cars, they're one of the best inventions since like, ever!"
I walked over to my locker and they followed since we usually go in order. My locker was closest to the entrance, Alani's was in between and Janae's was a few steps away from Alani's. I took out my chemistry textbook. I don't take my book bag home all the time; I usually have after school detention so I get my homework done there.
"I think we have a chemistry test today." Started Janae as we walked to our second period.
"No! Oh my god, you gotta be kidding me; that's today?!" Alani dramatically gasped. Of course. "Oh God, I'm so fucked. I mean I planned to do it last night, I don't know what happened." She groaned loudly, slowing down to open her backpack and take out her notes. You see, Alani has a die-hard habit of procrastinating. Especially when it comes to school work. She would either convince herself that she has all the time in the world to do this project or this homework, but obviously, she doesn't. And it's usually the last day she has to finish the work that she realizes these things.
"You better start studying, you have less than four hours." I stated.
The day went by extremely slow, as always, and I couldn't of been more happy to hear that last bell ring. Sighing in relief, I packed up my things and stuffed them in my heavy ass backpack (which I had been reminding myself to clean out for the past week), and rushed out the door with my skateboard in hand to meet the girls–Alani and Janae–out in the school's parking lot. They were both leaning against Alani's earth killing car. "Hola bitches."
They both held up the middle finger causing me to roll my eyes and feign that I was hurt. "Come on let's go. I'm tired as fuck and I wanna get this shit over with."
"Aren't you forgetting something." Janae stopped me with a raised brow.
I touched my pockets, "Nah, I got my phone right here."
"She means Ada idiot. We invited her to go shopping with us, remember?" Alani stated.
"Oh right." I almost forgot.
"Where the hell is she, though?" Janae shrugged and Alani continued to search around the lot. I took a look around as well so I can say I helped search and found her by the entrance talking to some other girl. "There she is." I loosely pointed towards the entrance.
"Ayo Ada!" Janae shouted from across the parking lot, when Ada looked over Janae motioned towards the car and a hurry up signal.
I think Ada got the messages and hugged the girl she was talking to goodbye before jogging over to us. "Uh hi, guys. We're still on for the mall?"
"Of course, hop in losers, we're going shopping."
