The assassin lunged at him, stabbing at him with his knife. Dimitri dodged out of the way and kicked him in the ribs. While he was gasping, Dimitri stole the knife from his hand, and grabbed him by the neck, forcing him on his knees. The assassin still held the air of calmness, blood dripping down his face.
"Who sent you?" My savior growled through his teeth.
The killer spat blood out through his teeth, "Kill me."
Dimitri dug the dagger into the man's neck. From where I was standing, I could see blood dripping from the wound. I finally saw emotion from the killer: hate.
"You wear the Medietas Crest, but yet you have no allegiance to your leader. I will not repeat myself, who sent you?"
The assassin's jaw dropped, when he realized that the leader of Medietas was the man who had him by the neck.
"I cannot say." He said, loyal to his master, stealing a glance at me.
"Although," he spoke, "I can tell that it's the same man who killed the girl's father."
I gasped, drawing the attention of both men. While Dimitri was distracted, the killer escaped his grasped and ran to the wall to the outside.
He turned toward the man that almost killed him, "I will warn you, my lord. This man is extremely powerful and always gets what he wants. And he wants the girl dead. I'd stay out of it, if you want to live." Then he disappeared behind the wall.
My heart was galloping in my chest.
Dimitri looked at me, his green eyes showed fury and confusion.
"I thought your father killed himself." He stated, waiting for me to elaborate.
Then something happened that neither of us expected: I burst into violent tears.
The dam of emotion broke, and I was feeling everything at once. Fear, anger, and grief rolled over in a tsunami, drowning me. Dimitri was just standing there, not know what to do with a crying young woman. He looked around with anxiety.
"Come here," he spoke softly, and lifted me into his arms.
It was a long time since I'd been this close to another human, since I had even been hugged. I was lulled by the sway of his walk. Tears were silently streaming down my face, so I tucked it into his chest to hide my shame. The plan was ruined.
The assassin who wore the Medietas Crest obviously had no allegiance to Dimitri. That was my only lead in proving who hired to assassins to kill Father. It was Viktor, I knew it without a doubt, I just needed to prove it.
I heard the sound of a door opening, and I lifted my face and looked around as Dimitri set me down on something soft.
"What is this place?" I wondered, cringing at my voice crack.
"I used to come here as a boy, and I would explore the castle grounds. I found all kinds of hidden places, and this one is my favorite." He answered my question.
He used to come here when he was younger? I took in the place. Sound bounced off of the stone walls, making everything echo, but the room was very small and cozy. I was on a small cot, with many thick blankets and homemade pillows. I just wanted to curl up here and hide from the world. There was a small stain glass window on the opposite side of the room, casting rainbows as the sun shown through. Unlike the castle, it brought warmth and peace to the room. In front of the fireplace, where Dimitri was starting the fire, there was a beautiful hand carved dining table and matching chairs.
