You make eye contact with your crush or you simply smile at each other then all of a sudden your in love. Too bad he doesn't care about you or ever will. "Who needs love anyway? Not me." I stop my rant when I hear a noise that sounds a lot like glass dropping. I swing my legs over my bed and slip my feet into some tennis shoes. "Wouldn't be surprised if Mel dropped some plates again" I sigh and stand up. No, I don't live by myself, in fact, I live with multiple people. I mean, I am in the cities "Best" Orphanage. But it's really a place for troubled kids like myself.
I look to my right and notice Mel is in fact sleeping. I turn on the lamp and crack the door. I peak out but the hallway light is out. "This is just one floor though" I slip out of my room and peak over the rail of the stairs. The kitchen light seems to be on so I jog down the stairs. Jesus I hope it's not Katy. She's the most annoying 13 year old you'll ever meet. I reach the bottom step and notice there is shards of broken plates leading into the kitchen. I peak into the kitchen and notice one of the newer kids. I think his name was James but I really never pay attention to the new comers.
I grab the broom from the closet and lean against the door frame "Need some help?" He looks up and nods towards the broken shards. "Would be nice" I sweep up some of the shards into a pile. "James right?" I stay focused on my pile and I hear him shuffle his feet "Yea" I lean the broom against the wall "I'm Charlie" He sweeps the pile into a dust pan and throws it away "Pretty name" I snort a laugh "If you say so" He wipes his hand across his forehead and smiles. "So why are you here" I ask knowing it's a personal question but hey, It's the real world.
I see sadness cross his eyes and he looks down at his shoes. "Sorry I know it's a per-" He looks back up and all traces of sadness is gone. "I never liked my parents." He sighs "They made me the way I am. I joined a gang." He watches me and I nod. "My parents are dead" I say with no emotion what's so ever. "I'm sor-" I hold my hand up "Don't feel sorry for me" I could tell he was trying to read me but I'm not an open book. "So your 16?" I ask and he nods "Turning 17 Two weeks from now" The official age you become an adult is 17. He could finally leave this place. "I'm 16." He nods once again. I feel a vibration in my pocket and I pull out my cell phone. "Hey listen I better get going"'I say and place my phone back in my pocket. "Bye Charlie" he waves, I wave back and run back up the stairs.
"Mel?!" I notice she's not in her bed. I pull out my phone and reread the message "Help"
Where is she and why does she need help? "Mel!" I scream her name when something touches me. I turn around and nothing's there "Hey Charlie" I turn back the other way and see Mel wrapped in a towel. "Mel?" She nods slowly "But your fine?!" I pull out my phone and show her the message "But I'm not fine! I can't find an outfit!" I glare at her "What even Mel" I follow her to her closet and pick up the first outfit I see "This would look great on you for the day" She stares at me "Charlie that's a bathing suit" I can't help but laugh to myself.
