The new city.

I press my hands onto the cold glass window. It extends its way around the entire room, providing what seems to be a never-ending view of the world below. This view would be quite beautiful if the ground below hadn't been so destroyed. Every way I turn in this room, I can see what's outside these stone walls - the universe outside the shelter. Booming drill sounds and the crashing of construction can be heard just across the room; they're working on something. I'm lucky to be up here. I'm one of the few people who have the luxury of living on the top floors - The top 4 stories of a building that reaches so far towards the sky. Anyone lower than that is not permitted to come in, saving the rest of us from the certain punishment of being down a few floors lower. It's painful really, watching people get rejected, watching them lose all hope and return to the concrete below - death around every turn. By observing every decision they make from above; a single split second of a wrong move and they're swallowed by the unforgiving virus. That could have been me and is sadly, almost everyone I know. My name is Bailey and this is the story of me, one of the "lucky" ones.

I break out of my fixation towards whats outside the windows and wander off to where they were building; constructing the bridge that helps us communicate with the other survivors. The bridge will go from this tower to the next, then from that building to the one after that. It'll be the new way if living. The area is surrounded by people - all gazing out the crack in the wall. The bridge connects to the floor they're standing on and reaches its way over the ruins below, latching onto the building closest to the one we're currently in. From what we know of them, which is not much, very few of those sluggish monsters can climb.

Everyone wants to stray across; maybe it's because they can't stand it here, maybe it's because they want something eventful to happen other than watching people underneath us scurry for shelter. They let the excitement of mysteries and uncertainties get the best of them. Blinded by thoughts of the other side - they don't realize the potential danger below, or maybe even their new encounters they're so excited about.

I can imagine it now, each and every building with those worthy top 4 floors connecting to the next, our new form of living and our new form of normalcy. A city within a city.
