Ahn Soomi knew Lee Jeno from school; he was her classmate since she was in year seven. They nearly had every class together, so, she thought she knew everything about him.
She was wildly wrong.
The moment she saw his slim figure step out of the school's courtyard, she could tell something was wrong. He wasn't alone, for one, and she could see a faint glow from his eyes. When he turned and saw her, she realized what was happening. No one was out at this time of night doing nothing. Including her.
She had called out to him, waving her hands around making the people he was with stifled a few laughs. She would have been embarrassed if it was any other day, but the way they all had strikingly similar features sent a shiver down her spine.
Golden Eyes.
Any fool knew what that meant. Vampires.
Vamps, though not rare these days, were more common to the inner city and belonged to gangs. Something Soomi didn't think Jeno would be involved in. They were often associated with turf wars and murder, something that had recently been introduced to her neighborhood. They didn't seem that bad though, as long as they didn't interfere with everyday life, but standing here now seemed to change her perspective.
She felt the need to go to the school, to see who they had killed if they had killed at all, but the fear implanted in her mind by the media carried her the opposite direction. She didn't want to be out on the dark streets alone for any longer than she had to be. She'd rather be home, under the heavy blanket in her bed with all of the lights on. She wanted to feel safe.
That wasn't achieved on her walk home. She kept hearing footsteps behind her, and even though she looked more than once, she never saw who they belonged to. She heard them quicken as she did and slowly get closer and closer. Her heart felt like it was going to beat out of her chest as the paranoia intensified.
Then she felt a hot wind grace the back of her neck.
She wanted to scream but she couldn't open her mouth to do so. Her skin was crawling and she felt like she was going to cry. Her hands were trembling and her legs were about to snap beneath her. She was numb with fear.
"I knew it was you," A low voice almost sung, it's breath hitting the same spot as it had before: right below her left jawline. "It's too bad," it continued, pushing her hair out of the way on the right and switching sides of her neck, "You're so pretty..."
Soomi wished she could do something, anything, but like the coward she always was, she didn't move a muscle. She couldn't. All she could do was wait for whatever was going to happen and hope someone would come save her. She heard her attacker open his mouth and prepare to bite her. She winced, tightly shutting her eyes, wishing this was all a dream.
She felt the tip of teeth brush against her neck but then they were gone, the attacker thrown against a nearby wall. As she turned around, she saw a pair of bodies together, wrestling on the ground. She couldn't tell who either person was, quite frankly, she didn't want to. After a few unstable steps, she ran for it, getting as far away as she could before she had to stop and take a breath.
With hands on her knees, she stopped in her tracks. She was closer to her neighborhood now, and the whole street was lit with street lights. There were even a few people roaming about. She felt relatively safe.
After a few deep breaths, Soomi started walking to her home. She noticed that a few people gave her strange looks, staring at her as they went by. It started to unsettle her, especially as she saw one of her neighbors walk by. His name was Mr. Na, but he didn't stare like the others. His whole expression was doleful. He didn't say a word.
Then, Soomi turned the corner, the last one she'd have to walk until it was a straight shot home.
The scene she saw made her confused at first. Lurid lights flashing everywhere with an abundance of people all over the street. It took her a moment for her eyes to adjust, and when they did, she realized that those lights were right in front of her own house. A whole team was camped just outside of her door, talking on radios and standing around.
Soomi's heart stopped, her stomach twisted, and her knees buckled. She hoped and prayed that what she knew had happened, didn't, but that wouldn't change anything. It was inevitable, the course of events that took place before today made it clear that her parents would be targeted soon. She just thought that it would be forgotten, drawn out. Now, they were dead.
As she slowly made her way towards her house, the sky started to cry with her. Tears and raindrops fell down her face and on to the ground. Her whole body was weak. She trudged towards the policemen and they slowly came to know her presence, turning to her familiar figure. They had all known her parents. Her mother was a judge and her father had been a policeman.
"Soomi," an officer named Jeon Areum cooed as she came towards the small girl, holding her arms out and engulfing her in a hug. Soomi lost all control she had, not that she had much, to begin with. A cry erupted from the teenage girl, but was muffled from the shoulder of Officer Jeon.
"I'm sorry," Officer Jeon murmured in Soomi's ear. She rubbed the poor child's hair back, feeling her heart break even more. The scene inside was horrendous, blood splattered all over the place and the bodies mutilated. Nothing a child should see, it turned all the stomachs who got a chance to see it.
"Choi Soomi?" another officer came up, holding a piece of paper and a pen. His name tag read Officer Xiao, and he was known to be slightly insensitive.
"Not now, Xiao Bolin," Officer Jeon commanded, making the large man go away. He went to the Chief, telling him that the time to strike was now, even if officer Jeon was with the ill-fated girl.
"it's now or never," Officer Xiao stated.
The old chief sighed, slicking back his hair before picking up his phone and making the call. A call he would live to regret, but as soon as he said the words, "we're ready," all choices had been made and Choi Soomi's fate had been decided.
It hadn't been 30 seconds after the Chief said those words when the all of the lights turned off. Everythign was pitch black, even the police cars, which were always left on, were sitting cold and silent.
A few screams erupted from the crowd that had surrounded the house. Officer Jeon held Soomi closer, trying to find where everyone had gone. It seemed that no matter where she walked, nothing was there. It was like everything was gone...
It wasn't long before Soomi felt the familiar warm breath on the back of her neck. This time, though, she wanted it to be over. She turned towards it, whatever it may be, and waited to die. She wanted to, at that moment, she wanted to be gone, away with her parents in some infinite oblivion, but that wouldn't happen. At least, not now. Not when this person, this thing had other plans. So many people did.
The thing, the person, hit Soomi over the head, gaining everyone's attention quickly, but no one moved. Nearly every police officer and offical knew what was happening. The ones who were deemed to act against the plan were left at home, given a rare day off, which none of them rejected. They would live to regret not coming tonight, the night Choi Soomi, daughter of Officer Choi Taehyun and Judge Choi Yubin, would disappear for what seemed like forever.
