Mercedes opened her eyes with a groan, everything burned, she could hardly feel herself think her head hurts much. She looked around a little more, and through the burning fire-like pain, she saw smoke coming off of the asphalt, and knew something was wrong.

She moved herself up off the ground, disregarding her smoking and burnt clothing when she couldn't see Kurt anywhere. Then it hit her.

He was still inside the car.

Mercedes basically ran, her entire body protesting in pain as she did so, but her worry smashed everything down. She basically tore the door off of the bent and smoldering car, pulling her best friend out of his driver's seat.

"Kurt!" she screamed at him and slapped his face a few times when they were safely in the grass, which smelled of smoke. He wearily opened his eyes, confusion painting his features. "We have to call the police," she said urgently.

Kurt would've rolled his eyes if  he wasn't so tired, "I'm sure this has caused enough attention we won't need to."

But for some reason, deep in her gut, Mercedes doubted what he was saying, things were... off. She wasn't sure of where they were, she didn't exactly recognize the place, and the smell of smoke was everywhere and nothing was even on fire!

"Mercedes, you're bleeding!" Kurt exclaimed when he saw her leg properly, and she was indeed bleeding from a long deep cut. "Why isn't there a ambulance or police car here yet?!"

"I don't know," Mercedes hissed, tearing up at the searing pain in her leg.

"I'm going to walk up the road and bring someone back, please don't go anywhere," Kurt explained getting up and starting to walk away.

"Don't go!" Mercedes screamed at him. "It isn't safe!"

"What do you mean?" Kurt asked, the confusion not as thick as before, as if he was starting to understand why Mercedes was afraid, even if they didn't have a name for it.

"Please stay here," she begged him. Reluctantly, Kurt agreed, and he sat in the grass, terror coursing through their veins, and Mercedes officially voiced her biggest doubt. "Kurt.. I don't think we're in Lima."

"Neither do I," Kurt whispered back, his eyes going cloudy.

They feel asleep there in that patch of grass, lying against one another for support. The stench of smoke seemed to grow thicker as time went on, causing each of them to cough in their sleeping states.

Kurt was the first to actually wake up, and the first to see the devilish  flames licking at the ground down the slope. His scream pierced the night and woke his friend, who also screamed upon seeing the hungry fire.

The two helped each other up and ran from smoke and flames, each panting and coughing due to the amount of smoke filling their lungs. Kurt was all too aware that the amount of smoke they had inhaled could kill them, and it made him run faster, needing to get to cleaner air. Despite his brain's own need for the clean air, he wouldn't leave Mercedes' side, not when she was bleeding so bad from her leg.

For what seemed like days, all Mercedes could see was fire. Bright orange and red flames demolishing everything in their path, her body was numb with fear. She feared being burnt to a crisp more than she did bleeding out. They ran across miles of asphalt and endless sections of grass.

This was it.

This was the end for each of them.

Then they saw someone they never expected to see.
