The Lion Kings: Prequel to The Lion King

Scene 3

Scene 3 begins. Baba and Mufasa are at the top of pride rock.

Baba: You see Mufasa, everything the light touches is our kingdom.

Mufasa: Wow! Look at everything! There's so much out there! So much fun to have!

Baba: Mufasa, one day the sun will set on my time here and rise with you the new ruler. I really need you to be ready and take that serious when the time comes.

Mufasa: But when you're gone, who will take care of us?

Baba smiles: Well by that time you will be all grown up.

Mufasa: Wow.

Baba: But that shadowy place over there you must never go-

Mufasa: Who would want to? It looks so boring.

Baba: Then I guess thats settled. Look around you, everything is important. From the crawling ants to the leaping antelope.

Mufasa: But we eat the antelope.

Baba: But when we die, our bodies become the grass and the antelope eat the grass, so we are all connected in the great circle of life.

Mufasa: Why aren't you telling Scar all this stuff too?

Baba: Since you are the oldest, you will be king first.

Mufasa: But what if I have a son by the time I die?

Baba: Then he will be king.

Mufasa: But what about Scar?

Baba: Scar will always be your right hand man.

Mufasa: What about Ndogo?

Baba: She will always be there to help you, and your children when you die

Mufasa: Okay, dad.

The scene changes to a cave, inside is Zira and Scar enters the cave looking bored.

Scar: Okay I'm here, what do you want to do?

Zira: I dont know, I didn't want you to even come in here. I'm just fine with being in here alone. I don't like playing with you Mufasa and Ndogo, you guys just do stupid things.

Scar: (upset) Well my mom told me to come in here! I don't even like you!

Zira: But if you really think about it, I'm your only friend.

Scar: No you're not! Mufasa is my friend!

Zira: (laughs) He's not your friend, he's your enemy, you would be king if it wasn't for him.

Scar: My dad says I'm going to be king after Mufasa.

Zira: Yeah, when he dies, and by then he will have a son or daughter by then! You're like his understudy, you are right behind him, but you'll never actually get to do anything!

Scar: Well, maybe Mufasa and I could both be king, since we're so close in age...

Zira: Don't you get it? No one even wants you to be king! They're just telling you that you'll get to be king eventually so you don't try and challenge Mufasa because they think you'll lose.

Scar: I would lose, Mufasa's much stronger than me.

Zira: That's exactly what they want you to think! If it were up to me, I would make you king, Mufasa is to much of a risk-taker, and he's always late for things.

Scar: But I like Mufasa, he's my brother!

Zira: (groans)

Scar: Besides, he'll make a good king.

Zira: And you'll just stand there and watch him.

Scar: What if I ask Baba if Mufasa and I can both be king.

Zira: it's not going to-

Scar: it's worth a try.

Zira: Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you!
