"What?" Romanoff asks me.
I clear my throat. "Natavona," I state firmly.
Director Fury nods curtly. "Good."
"I don't believe we've been properly introduced," Captain America says, holding his hand out to me. "I'm Steve."
I shake his hand, not saying anything. Of course I know who he is.
"Back to the silent game, then?"Hawkeye asks in a somewhat joking manner. A faint smile touches my lips for a split second before vanishing. He shakes his head, smirking. "I'll take that as a yes."
"You obviously can talk, so why stay silent," Stark asks in his sarcastic voice. I look at Romanoff with a question in my eyes. He knows I can't answer that, doesn't he?
She smirks at me, "Yes, he is always like this. For a genius, he can be incredibly dumb." Romanoff looks at everyone in the room, then back at me. "Come on," She says. I oblige and follow her out of the room, then out of the complex itself. "Hungry?" I nod. I'm starving.
Romanoff gets in the driver seat of a car and I get in the font seat. She pulls out of the parking space and drives off through the streets of New York City. She pulls into a parking lot and we both get out. I follow her into a diner and sit down at a booth in the window. I look out at the street.
As always, it was bustling with people and cars. All those people off to who knows where. I wonder if they all have family, a kid or a husband or wife. A cousin or a sister. A job that they rely on to pay the bills. A job they hate or a job they love. Is that where they're going right now? Are they going home or are they maybe meeting up with someone for lunch. Maybe they're going to a resting home or the hospital.
"Can I get you anything to drink, miss?" The server asks, snapping me out of my trance.
"Water please," I reply. She nods and walks off. I look over my menu and try to decide what to eat. When I come to a decision, I put down the menu.
"So," Romanoff says. "Are you feeling any better?"
I look at her with a sad smile, "Somewhat. In no small way thanks to you."
She inclines her head. "I have to admit, I wasn't expecting you to say anything."
I shrug, "Well, I can't be a complete mute, now can I?"
"Guess not. So why were you being silent in the first place, if you don't mind me asking?"
"I didn't know if I could trust anything or one. I was scared." I admit. "I still am nervous. I don't know if this is all an illusion or what."
"Can't blame you for that. I imagine this has been a lot for you to deal with." She replies.
"Yeah," I smirk. "It is that." Though, I can't help but think. Nothing that I can't handle. The server comes back and sets down our drinks.
"Are you ready to decide, or do you need a few more minutes," She asks politely.
"We're ready," Romanoff says. We order our food then sit in silence for a couple minutes.
"So," I state.
"So?" Romanoff asks.
"You're an Avenger, huh?" I asks, somewhat rhetorically. To be honest, I didn't know what to talk about.
"Yep," She agrees. "And you're just a normal girl?"
"I do my best," I smile. "Somehow, I'm not sure people will see me like that anymore."
"No, probably not," She smiles back. "So what's your 'normal' life like?"
"Not very interesting," I admit."I have a job that pays the bills, thought probably don't have it for long considering the whole hostage thing. I have a couple friends and a place to live. Don't really have any family." I say.
"Sorry," She tells me, her eyes softening a little.
I shrug, "It's okay. It is what it is, you know? You just have to make the best of it."
Romanoff nods, "Yeah, that I do understand."
"Just be prepared," Romanoff tells me in the car. "You'll probably be asked quite a bit of questions."
I nod, "To be expected." We ride in silence for a few minutes before I say, "Do I call you Romanoff? Or is it Widow?"
"You can call me Natasha," She smirks.
"Okay," I reply. "You're aS.H.E.I.L.D Agent and an Avenger?"
"Yeah."
"Wow," I say, kind of impressed.
"I'm also a trained assassin and spy," Natasha informs me.
"That's kind of cool. I mean, probably not while it was happening. Or, I mean, you might not think it's very cool..." I stumble over my words.
She chuckles, "It's alright. It is pretty bad ass."
I laugh, "Yeah it is."
"So what about you?"
"What about me?"
"Have you had any experience with fighting?" Natasha asks.
"Some," I admit.
"And you really don't have any family?" She asks, cautious.
I bit my lip, "Yeah." She raises an eyebrow. It's not entirely true, but still. "My parents were killed when I was young." That's true, at least.
"Oh," She glances at me. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay," I tell her quickly."It was a long time ago."
We pull into the parking complex. Without a word, I walk side by side with Natasha in the hallway. "You ready?" She asks me when we reach a door and I nod, taking a deep breath. She opens the door and we walk in, side by side.
Tony Stark and Hawkeye are more towards the opposite side of the room and they turn to look at us as we stop. Steve is on the right side, near Hawkeye, and Dr. Banner is to the left, more removed from the group. Director Fury walks over to stand between where Hawkeye and Tony Stark are.
"Glad you could join us," Fury says. "Ms. Stark."
