in kindergarten they taught us about emotion
that a smile meant "happy," a crinkled brow meant "scared"
but in todays adolescant commotion,
I don't feel well prepared
in middle school health your taught the warning signs,
to help kids draw the line between "fine" and "not fine"
but often "sad" isn't something you can diagnose,
because "fine" and "not fine" are really so close
the world has taught us that depression is proud,
that it appears as scars on the skin,
that it shows up in screamo songs played too loud.
but usually such sadness is much deeper within.
society has taught us that feelings are bad,
that it isn't acceptable to feel hopeless or sad,
to "suck it up" or "have some grit"
and we're taught that emotion can not be admit
and that's the scariest part is it not?
how quietly we despair,
because through expierience we've been taught,
that not a soul will care.
now i want you to listen and take this in,
all these things you've been taught aren't true,
and i don't care how conviced you have been,
feelings are okay, it's okay to be you
and i'm here to tell you that someone does care,
and they probably won't show it, because they've been taught too,
but i'll bet you a buck you are someones prayer,
and someone's been through what you're going through
and that you are meant for someone,
maybe not in a romantic way,
and if you were gone,
it's a price that person would pay
so do them a favor,
and stay
