The dead are alive

There it is. My destination. I don’t know why, but I was walking towards it. I stopped at the gate, but the urge was too strong, I was being pulled closer and closer to it until I finally stepped inside. The urge was gone. It was replaced by sweaty palms and my heart racing. I was startled by rustling in the trees. I ran, hoping to get out of this horrible nightmare as fast as possible. As I ran closer to the gate the cemetery seemed to be getting larger. Freedom seemed to be getting further and further away. I tried to walk through the gate but something was stopping me. I look around, fear threatening to overwhelm me.

I look at the gate once more, seeing a light coming towards me. I looked once more at the light, seeing a night guard holding it; I felt a whole load of relief wash over me. Thinking that I could finally get out of this hell hole. I screamed and screamed until my throat was sore. He didn’t hear me. I screamed a little more, but after a while I finally gave up devastated that he chooses not to hear me. I turned around once more looking at the old man in devastation. I started to walk deeper into the cemetery thinking that there must be another exit somewhere.

I quickened my pace as I searched for another exit. As I walked deeper and deeper into the cemetery it felt as if my heart had stopped. It had only been twenty minutes but it had felt like an eternity. As I walked I felt this strange sense that somebody was following me. I turned around only to see darkness and a lot of trees and bushes. I turned back around and kept on walking. I was hoping it wouldn’t be too much longer because my leg was getting sore; a little while back I was involved in a car accident, breaking my leg in two places. Even today, my leg still hasn’t fully recovered; I still feel the pain like it only happened yesterday. I trudged on, hoping this would end, hoping I would find a way out.

I looked ahead, hoping to see a gate that would lead out of this horrible nightmare- instead I saw a light shining not too far away. I felt compelled to draw closer to it, and I found my feet walking towards it before I had time to register if this could be dangerous or not. My brain screamed danger at me, my heart raced at a mile a minute- but still I walked. I was being drawn in- I couldn’t stop it. I tried to turn away, to escape, but I just couldn’t.

The light became so bright that I no longer saw anything but it. The cemetery disappeared around me, the trees and gravestones blending together to become the light itself. Ahead, I saw an object. It was dark compared to the blinding whiteness I was surrounded by, I fought the light that was blinding my eyes and tried to see what it was. I approached it, wondering what it was, what could be inside it. I stood beside it, realising that it was a coffin. I ran my hand over the smooth wood before opening it- wondering what could be inside- who could be inside.

I gasped and slammed the coffin shut, startled at what I saw. I screamed and clasped my hand over my mouth, the horror of what I had just seen consuming me. I opened the coffin again thinking that I was hallucinating. I stared at the person in front of me. The person ahead of me was me.
