I could see my breath in front of me, a sigh of relief over the stresses from the wedding. What had felt like months in reality it was only a fortnight ago. A small hint of a smile danced on the corners of my lips with how calm everything now was. After the wedding and the announcement from our surrogate mother that we are having a little boy. With Xavier by my side, our fingers entwined, we trekked up a winding trail to the breathtaking view of Point Lookout.
We made it! It was such an exhilarating and spectacular view, this little milestone made me feel like I could take on the world. The way the dark ominous clouds brushed around the edges of the twin peaked mountain range, signifying that a devastatingly powerful storm was approaching. Worried, I stood there watching him study the mountain, his eyes filled with fascination and wonder. I sighed quietly. I was still so much in love with him, after all this time we have had together; he was like the missing puzzle piece that completed my little life. I studied his features for the thousandth time. He had vibrant baby blue eyes, hidden underneath thick bushy eyebrows that were furrowed in a worrisome expression due to the upcoming storm. His high strong, defined cheekbones were jaggered from old claw marks. With a long, thin nose pointed sightly, casting a small shadow over his soft plump pastel pink lips that were jutted in a slight pout with worry. They drew a small amount of attention away from is square jaw defining his small pointed chin.
I reached up onto the tips of my toes and kissed his forehead lovingly, trying to remove the creases of worry that had started to appear. I let my lips linger for a moment before I turned on my heel and walked back down the trail a little ways to prepare for the encroaching menacing storm. Suddenly, there was an earth shattering boom go off in the near distance. A few seconds after, a boulder the size of a small car rolled past, narrowly missing me. It was only mere seconds after it had passed I hear a groan of someone who was in pain.Worried that it was Xavier, I started to go looking for the origin of the noise. By the time I had found the injured person, it was raining heavily. The rain had felt like sharp freezing shards of ice falling from the sky. I rounded a large, ancient tree and realized it was whom I feared the most. Xavier. I rushed forward and held him close to my body.
"Shh shh, it's ok. It's ok. I'm here now Xay, lets get you back to the campsite ok?" I said to him, pleased that I had found him but worried about his potential injuries.
When we had arrived back at the campsite, I gently laid him on the ground inside the cave and raced around to find the medical kit and the emergency thermal blanket. After he was wrapped up in the blanket I started to Asses his injuries, however as soon as I touched his left leg he shrieked out in pain. I whimpered slightly knowing that I had caused his pain to intensify, I cut off his trousers and gasped at the sight of his pierced thigh. Sticking out of his leg, staring at me in the face, was a tree branch painted in his blood. Then my body took over, checking for more injuries and to see how bad the damage was on his leg. It all came back from my days as a veterinarian, and my number one priority was to keep my patient alive.
As we wait out the rampaging storm I thought long and hard on how I was to get him out to safety. After several hours of unrelenting weather I noticed his breathing become shallow and his pulse quickening. I lay by his side, holding his hand tightly I watched him turn his head to whisper in my ear.
"Dominic, I love you with all my heart. Please when I die move on. Look after our son, tell him stories, and make him happy. Please do not waste away, be happy. For our son. It is all I ask of you." He rasped quietly in my ear.
"N-no please don't go Xay, our baby needs you. Please stay." I cried silently as I curled up into his side.
He rubbed my hair and replied softly, "It is okay sweetheart, you will see me again soon." I reached up and kissed his lips one last time, before watching the light leave his eyes.
