Prologue

(Athena'sPOV)

Monday; the day also known as Hell. I glanced over at the clock to see that it was 9:00am which means I have forty-five minutes to get to class. Fall semester was finally coming to an end and I couldn't be happier to get a break from the constant work. One more semester before graduating, then the real problem would arise: Finding a job to repay all of my loans. Just the thought of taking out another loan for the spring semester gave me a headache. I got out of bed to head for the shower when it dawned on me what day it was: October 21st, my birthday. It's not every day you turn twenty-one, but honestly I really wasn't looking forward to it. I had nothing planned and I damn sure couldn't afford to do anything anyway.

I grabbed my towel and headed towards the shower, turning the water to a lukewarm temperature. I got in the shower and let the warmth of the water flush away my tiredness as I scrubbed my body with my shower gel, the sweet smell of cherry blossoms scenting the bathroom. After fifteen minutes, I hopped out and dried off, heading back towards my bed when I heard the phone ring. I looked down to see the name Lisa flashing on the screen. I prepared myself for the scream I knew would follow after I answered.

"Hel-," I was cut off as the voice of my screaming best friend thundered in my ear.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYYYYYY ROSIEEEEE!!!!!" I had to remove the phone from my ear to ensure I wouldn't lose my hearing from Lisa's yelling.

"Thank you Lisa. But do you have to be that loud?"

"Of course Rose! It's not every day a girl turns twenty-one!" Lisa yelled. I loved my best friend, even though sometimes she was a little over the top. We've been best friends since eighth grade and now, eight years later, we were still as close as ever. "So what's the plan to celebrate your big day?" I heard her ask and I thought about it.

"Well, I have no money and I didn't plan anything. So I guess I'm settling for a night in with some reading and ice cream," I replied.

"Oh no no no honey. I don't think so. You do that every night. We're going out tonight! I'll be over when I get off of work and we are going shopping. Tonight, we dance and legally drink the night away!" I couldn't do anything except chuckle at my crazy best friend.

"Okay fine, but the tab is on you," I warned her. I heard her laugh this time and I smiled.

"Of course it is! You are the birthday girl after all! I'll see you later bestie!" I heard her reply.

I hung up the phone, glancing at the time on the screen and realized I had twenty-five minutes left to get dressed and make it to class on time. I threw on my faded black skinny leg jeans, an oversized NYU hoodie, and my brown Uggs. Grabbing my keys and slinging my purse over my shoulder, I open the door and walk out into the cool fall breeze. The weather felt refreshing as I walked three blocks down to the university. The beautiful view of the city was one of the main reasons I chose to attend NYU. I looked up at the tall buildings shading the sidewalk and the leaves beginning to fall from the trees, dancing on the ground and across the streets. It really was a breathtaking view. Passing small boutiques, I admired the items in the window while glancing at my wrist watch and realizing I had fifteen minutes left. Still strolling, I notice an older female coming out of a shop. In normal situations, I would give a light smile and continue walking, but when I looking at this woman I notice how she seems irregularly pale and gasping for breath. I immediately take the few steps left to reach the woman while frantically asking if she is okay.

Suddenly she collapses and I freeze. At that moment, a young female emerges from the boutique with a frantic look on her face. At the sight of the woman on the ground, the young female's face pales as she breaks down crying out "oh no, mom!" Shock overwhelms me at first, but I soon go into medical mode and begin assisting the lady to the best of my ability.
