It's been a normal day, as usual. Zoning in and out, and trying to stay awake. People say high school doesn't get hard until your junior and senior year, but I'm a sophomore, and I still struggle just to keep my grade a C to B average.
I slowly began sinking down into my chair, when the announcements came on, and nearly scared me to death.
"Ava Johnson, please report to the main office immediately, and grab your stuff."
I slowly got up, more confused then I've ever been, as all the immature boys said "OOOO" . I rolled my eyes and left the classroom, with my heavy bag dragging behind me.
I got to the office, and 3 sheriffs and my mother looked at me with sad eyes. My mom had tears strolling down her cheek.
"Mom? Why are you here? " I questioned. "Whats going on?"
One of the sheriffs walked up to me, and said "We found her body. Alexis Lockhart."
My heart stopped almost immediately. I felt like I couldn't breath. Tears started to well up in my eyes. I slowly sank down in one of the uncomfortable office chairs, and let my tears come out. I cried for at least ten minutes, before one of the sheriffs took my hand and helped me stand up.
"Would you like to come with us to say your goodbyes? Her family will only allow you to see her. "
I nodded my head, and me and my mom followed them out of the office. We walked out of my small school, and me and my mom got into the back of one of the police cars. We zoomed off down the highway, soon reaching the police station. Inside, we followed them into one of the back rooms, where people were investigating a dead female body on the table. I walked up to her and gasped.
"That's not her." I said quietly.
"We know this is hard for you, but we did DNA tests on the body, and it matches Alexis's DNA exactly." Said one of the sheriffs.
"Look, this isn't her. I know her better than even her own family knew her. She was my best friend. I think I would know. Thanks for making an attempt to try and close the case, but that isn't her." I said.
I walked out of the police station and ran home. I couldn't believe that they thought that was Alexis. After 5 years, I can't believe they thought it was her. Tears stung my eyes as I ran home in the harsh winter weather.
I got home, and went on my laptop. The first thing I did was go to a secret file I made a while ago. I opened up the first document that came up, and stared at the screen. It was a picture of me and Alexis, the day before she went missing. She looked nothing like the girl in the police station. I couldn't believe that the police and Alexis's family could've been so stupid to believe that that girl was Alexis.
I closed my laptop, as I heard the front door open. My mom screamed my name. I walked downstairs, to find her standing there still crying.
"What were you thinking? They just found your best friend that you have known since you were two, and you have the nerve to run out on them? They were trying to help you out, and let you see her one last time before they close the case and bury her!" My mom yelled.
"Really mom? You're going to come home and criticize me now? I know what I saw! That wasn't her. If you don't want to believe me, then fine. Im done here." I yelled back.
I ran back up to my room and slammed my door. I sat in silence for a while, then an idea popped into my head. I unlocked my phone and quickly texted a group chat I was in, with my 3 close friends, Jack, Avery, and Layla.
You guys want to help me out with something? - Ava
Almost 1 minute after sending, my phone buzzed three times.
Depends. Does it involve food? - Jack
Sure! - Layla
I guess - Avery
First of all, no Jack, it doesn't. I was wondering if you guys would like to go on an adventure. We will be gone for a long time. We can't tell anyone though. - Ava
So you want us to run away with you? Why? - Layla
Remember Alexis? Well the police thought they found her body, that's why I had to go to the office today. They took me to the police station so I could see her one late time, but when I saw the body on the table, I didn't recognize her. That's because it wasn't her. So will you guys go on a hunt with me to find her? - Ava
I don't know Ava... you're my friend and all.. but I don't think it's a good idea to run away. The police will come looking for us, and then we will be in trouble when they find us. - Layla
I like adventures.. I'm in! - Jack
Anything to help you out :) Besides, I don't get treated very well at home, so I doubt my parents will care if I'm gone. - Avery
Come on Layla, you're such a goodie goodie. Take a risk for once. - Jack
Okay, whatever. Lets go find Alexis! - Layla
Awesome! I honestly didn't think you guys would agree to come with and help me with this.. this is gonna be risky. - Ava
I quickly turned off my phone as my mom came in. I pretended to sleep, even though my phone kept buzzing. My mom kissed me on my forehead, and whispered 'Im sorry. I love you'. She left my room, quietly closing the door behind her. My phone kept buzzing, so I turned it on and opened my group chat.
When are we leaving for this? - Jack
And what should we bring? - Avery
Pack two big backpacks full of supplies like money, weapons, clothes, tools to help us with, food, water, etc. Whatever you can fit in your bags, bring. Meet me at school in the morning. We are going to meet there, then we are leaving to start off our adventure. - Ava
Sounds good - Layla
See you there :D - Jack
Alright. - Avery
I quietly got out of my bed and started filling the two biggest bags I could find. I filled them with everything I could think off bringing that would come in handy, then grabbed one more bag to fill. I filled three large bags, then I went to my bed and dozed off.
