I watched the world outside speed by in a blur. The static of the radio has us all on edge and all I could do was pull me knees to my chest.
I tried not to cry. I tried not to think but this almost made it worse. The overwhelming fear lingering in my chest as Johnny tried to talked to me. Tried to snap me out of my trance and in the end he gave up. I didn't blame him.
In the back seat of the jeep Lilly was dying. We presumed her bite was infected and if it was we all knew what would happen to her. She'd turn into one of the freaks. One of those creatures.
The car came to a sudden stop as we reached our destination.
Johnny and Tayn rushed Lilly inside and I slowly followed behind them. This wasn't fair. This wasn't right but we had to do this. We couldn't risk it.
Lilly groaned in pain and we were helpless to stop it.
My eyes fell on the gun Johnny was now holding. He asked Tayn and I to leave but I couldn't. I had to stay with Lilly.
"Ella... Let's keep guard, okay?" Tayn said as she grabbed my arm and slowly lead me to the front of the house.
I covered my ears but I still heard the gun shot echo around the surrounding area.
Johnny joined us outside. His face which was normally smiling and grinning had recently fallen into a habit of this frowning business. I'd given up hope when he started frowning and the more he did the more helpless I believed we were.
I studied Johnny's expression for a moment. The corners of his lips were turned downwards, his eyes had dark circles under them and worst of all his hair which used to be his pride and joy was limp and sticky looking against his head.
Tayn hugged him and at the same time took the gun away from him. They had loved each other before the 'war' broke out and somehow they had managed to stay strong throughout it all.
A war may confuse you into thinking that we were fighting people but no we were fighting a plague. Once you were infected there was no cure but death and if you didn't die you'd be another one of the freaks.
I sat down on the porch step. Everything was quiet and the air around felt hot and sticky. Humid would be another word for it.
"We should go." I started, "who knows how many freaks the gunshot may have attracted? They'll be here within the hour."
Johnny nodded pulling back from Tayn's embrace.
"Gather as many supplies as you can carry and hurry them into the jeep. We'll keep heading North so we can get out of this damned heat." Johnny instructed and without a word I was off hunting around the house.
I walked up to Lilly's body. As sickening as it may have been I watched her for a moment. I expected her to wake up. I really wanted her to insult me as she usually did but she was gone.
I searched her body for anything useful. On her body I found a sharp knife, batteries and a watch. I took it and stuffed it inside my small satchel.
I then made my way around the house pilfering what I thought may be useful.
When I was finished I made my way back to Lilly's body but before I entered the room I heard Tayn scream at Johnny.
"You can't do this! Please John we're not animals." She yelled.
I walked into the room and found Johnny holding the stiff corpse of Lilly.
"She'll be a distraction. Besides it's not like she'll be doing much with her body now." He stated and without even explaining to me he carried Lilly outside.
He set her on the porch before he gestured for us both to get into the jeep.
Tayn sobbed over Lilly's body but neither Johnny or I had the guts to comfort her as comforting her would just bring us both to tears.
"Tayn get in the jeep..." I said before climbing into it myself. I shut the door behind me and watched as Johnny fought with Tayn to get her inside the jeep and to leave Lilly behind. That's when I caught a glimpse of one of them,
The monster with its humanoid features but long unnatural looking appendages walked or more rather stumbles like a toddler to wards us.
I reached for Lilly's knife. A stretcher I could finish in a matter of seconds. I waited for it to get close enough to the car before I hit it with the door.
It was sent tumbling down the small hill and with this I had alerted Tayn and Johnny to the freak.
"Can we get this show on the road?!" I screamed at them as the creature started to get back up although it was clearly shaken it could still do quite a bit of damage.
Tayn climbed into the seat beside me and Johnny got into the drivers seat.
I locked the doors as the creature slowly walked up to inspect the care but as I knew it didn't sense us. The car protected us from its eyes as it was almost blind anyway. Instead I watched in horror as it creeped towards Lilly's body.
Johnny drove away before I could see what happened to the body but honestly I didn't want to know. I wanted to pretend that everything was fine and that Lilly was still alive and she had just left us. That was easier for me to cope with.
Silence fell around us again. Usually this emptiness would've been filled with a snide comment from Lilly or her blasting music from a Walkman she had bought before any of this had started. We all told her she was stupid for not just buying an iPod but at least we had some music with her around....
I stared out at the now darkening sky and grew increasingly worried. How long could we run from the shadows that chased us? How long before we came freaks ourselves?
"Ella it'll be your turn to drive next." John sighed. I nodded and turned to face Tayn. God she had the worst of us all. She had been sweet and innocent before all this and now she was still sweet. But innocent? Not so much.
As the day grew darker John and I switched seats.
I was convinced him sitting beside Tayn was a horrible idea considering what he let happen to Lilly's body but instead he held Tayn close to him. He comforted her and I was sure I may have even seen a tear in his eye.
I switched on the radio and surprising I heard someone taking, "Adare is safe but needs survivors for help.." I was going to ask Tayn and John what they wanted to do but they were both asleep so I turned the car around and headed for Adare.
