It was first mentioned in a small, organized room with two boys seated on the bed placed in the corner. The older one; a black-haired male with blonde tips and cat-like eyes. The younger one; wild, orange hair, bangs clipped away from his face. His eyes sparkled--not because of anything he heard that piqued his interest, but rather because they were always like that. To him, everything piqued his curiosity.
The younger boy's name was Hinata. It was a rather fitting name for someone with his personality. His smile was always bright and bold, and he always tried his best to make other's happy.
The older one--Kenma. His long hair was kept in a bun, but he made sure to keep a section loose so he could cover his face. Kenma wasn't exactly what you would call "optimistic", not to mention sociable.
It was a mystery how these two polar opposites became friends. Nonetheless, they've been together ever since middle school. Although neither of them have flat out said it, they really depend on and need each other a lot.
"Uwaa, Kenma! Your cousin sounds really cool! He's worked in so many different places and fields!" Hinata said, beaming.
"Mm, he is kind of interesting, I guess," the male responded as his singers kept tapping and moving the controller buttons. "Oh, he told me once that he worked for a while in one of the shopping malls nearby--some kind of tech store."
The two boys were playing video games. It was some game where you had to battle monsters and grow stronger by picking up items. There was one super rare item that was basically a myth in the game. Only super elite gamers who dedicated their lives to this game knew how to find it, but Kenma and Hinata were determined to find it as well.
"Really? Wow, that's so cool!"
Kenma nodded his head. "He told me once, though, that there are some pretty whacky things that go on between a few of the stores and their employees."
This sentence, more than others that Hinata has heard, piqued his interest. He looked away from the television screen. "Really? Like what?"
"I. . . I don't know. He didn't want to tell me. Funny thing is that nobody really knows, not even the customers who visit the stores. The employees seem to keep their affairs on the down low," Kenma said, reaching over to the nightstand and grabbing his cup of tea. He took a sip as Hinata spoke.
"Oh, that sounds so. . . so. . . so fun! And interesting," Hinata smiled, "but I'm dying to know what they do! And who they are! And--and what mall it's in!! I wanna go visit!"
Kenma sighed, then his eyebrows furrowed together as he battled a creature in the game."I thought so. I tried bribing my cousin so you could know, but he wouldn't spill."
Hinata crossed his arms, puffing air from his mouth in disappointment. "Hmph, he sounds pretty stubborn. I can tell you two are related. . ."
Kenma gave Hinata a glare before sighing as well. "Well, very few have actually seen something happen. It's not like you could go and visit every mall in Japan."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. . ." Hinata said with a look of disappointment.
The two continued playing the game. After a few minutes of walking around and battling, Hinata's face lit up.
"K-Kenma! Look!"
Kenma looked over at Hinata's side of the split screen. He noticed the glowing around Hinata's character, and the strength bar rising rapidly.
"Did you just. . . find the item?" Kenma asked in complete awe.
Hinata nodded his head violently, his smile reaching a mile wide.
"Wow, I can't believe you actually found the rarest item of the whole game. . ."
Hinata looked at Kenma with a look of confidence. "Yeah, me neither."
