When I am 35, I hope the world is a much different place. I hope we all open our eyes to reality but we never let it stop us from dreaming. I hope our optimism overpowers our pessimism and depression becomes just a myth. I hope that kids will not be forced to grow up so soon and they’re raised only to know compassion and acceptance instead of hatred and judgment.
When I am 35, People will realize that everyone is beautiful in some way and the line that separates what is and what is not will be blurred. People will look in the mirror and love what’s looking back at them. They’ll wear designer watches and silver bracelets around their wrists because they want to, not to hide the slices in their arms. Shame will never come from eating when you’re hungry, and words like “Fat” and “Skinny” will just be words, not labels. We will not turn to drugs and alcohol to wash away the tears, the fears, the problems and the self-hatred. We will all recognize that suicide is not the only option.
When I am 35, people will acknowledge that human rights were not meant for just one color, sexual orientation, or race. Everyone will get the opportunity to dress up on their wedding day with no eyebrows raised in disgust. A man and a man, a woman and a woman, can publicly display their affection without creating an uprising. If a man would rather be a woman, we will let him. If a woman wishes to be a man, we will let her. Saying “I love you” will not have so many rules and qualifications.
When I am 35, selfishness and greediness will be nonexistent. Those more fortunate than others will open their hearts and their homes and their wallets. You will never have to fear for your own security or wonder if you’ll be on the streets in the nearby or not so nearby future. You will never have to worry about not having enough food or money, jobs will be plentiful.
When I am 35, I will no longer look at the world with sorrow. Thoughts of joy will fill our minds and relaxation will finally be possible for everyone. We can all open the door for ourselves when opportunities come knocking. The world will be a better place.
