A sharp pain in the back of her head told her something was wrong.
"Pull over." She had barely managed the words before a cop car sped into the lane behind them. Great. She checked the rear view mirror in annoyance, before spotting the all too familiar banner detailing his side. "To punish and enslave". Oh, that's real low key there Barricade. She rolled her eyes dramatically.
"I take that back, keep moving." Her stepmother looked back at her in disbelief.
"What does this douche want? I'm not even speeding!" She gestured to her dashboard wildly, and with an exasperated sigh flipped her blinker to pull over.
"NA NA UH-!" She launched herself into the front seat and clicked off the blinker while simultaneously tugging the car back onto the road.
"Carmen! What the hell! Are you trying to get us arrested?" She smacked her hands away from the wheel and attempted to pull back over to the median.
"Have you ever seen a cop car with THAT on the side of it?!" Carmen directed the rear view mirror to the weirdly girly script on his side, she wouldn't mention the fact that it was girly handwriting in her report... Or would she? Would she really even do a report? She debated how much of an ass she really wanted to be before snapping her attention back to the task at hand. She watched her stepmother swallow thickly before relaying instructions. "Yeah, I didn't think so. Just..." She blanked on what to tell her. This was kinda Optimus' thing. "Keep going straight?" Wow, real confident in that one aren't we Carmen? She smacked her palm to her face and whispered a silent prayer that any other Autobot but him, and she meant any other, would be in the area. She couldn't meet his glowing blue optics when he scolded her. She pulled out the phone only meant for emergencies, a shitty little Nokia, but that wasn't the point... Or was it? What? She glanced at herself in the mirror wondering just how much of her mind she had lost dealing with the Bots for so long. Before thinking about it too much she punched in his number. It barely rang once before his baritone voice sounded through the phone, and suddenly the phone wasn't so shitty anymore.
"What's happened? You were told to stay at base." Carmen smiled to herself letting out a quiet chuckle. He could be telling her the base was out of milk, and still manage to sound like Megatron himself had her in his hand.
"Always so worried Optimus, you should take a break someti-" She looked back and realized Barricade was almost touching bumpers with her stepmothers 1997 Honda CR-V. Naughty boy, she clicked her tongue in a disapproving tone. As if hearing her he accelerated almost gently and then completely plowed into the trunk shattering the rear window and sending them flying off the road. She managed to keep a grip on the phone as glass and dirt rained from every side. Wait, was the roof getting closer to her face or was that just her. A crack and one bloody nose later determined that she hadn't put her seatbelt back on after grabbing the wheel, and was currently being slapped around the interior like a limp noodle. A slur of Cybertronian curses left her mouth as she went from roof to floor to every other part of the car. A particularly nasty smack into the only window still intact, her luck right?, left her dazed and so. very. nauseous. Suddenly the car slammed hard into something and stopped moving almost completely, upside down... Of course. She brought her eyes up and suddenly realized she was the only one in the car.
"Oh, no no no no." She searched through the broken window frames seeing a crumpled body maybe 15 feet from her, her step mothers blonde hair splayed everywhere splashed red with blood. She could hear her name being called from somewhere around her. The phone. She glanced around frantically, nearly pukeing when she moved too fast, and found it only feet from the car. She reached her arm out only to have it painfully stepped on as a man dragged her from the car. She glanced up and just about flipped shit. Barricade's holoform grabbed her by the hair and dragged her away from the reach of her phone. Where were the other people on the highway at? There were clearly cars when he rammed them.
"No! Get off me, you fat douche hole!" She kicked and screamed and clawed at him as best she could, and burning pain went up her side and she felt like she was gonna puke. She glanced down to see a razor sharp blade sticking out of her soft stomach. Oh god, she tasted copper, she gagged. He threw her to the ground unceremoniously, leaning over her to pull the blade farther though. She let out a scream she didn't know she could make and slapped at his hands weakly. Barricade twisted the blade and pushed the end into the soft ground beneath. Another scream and she writhed in silence for a while. Then suddenly she stilled. He glanced to her face and she just stared at him. It... Unnerved him. In her stare she beckoned him closer, pain still etched onto her features. Humans usually didn't have this much courage when looking death in the face, no matter how long they'd been around the Autobots. A buzzing began quiet at first, barely noticeable, somewhere in the back of his head alarms went off. She had the cons interest. He leaned in close her breath warm on his ear, she giggled quietly.
"You're fucked." It was then apparent that the buzzing was no longer quiet, nor was it buzzing. The sounds of engines being pushed to the limit resounded around them. Barricade growled at the girl before his holoform vanished only leaving the sound of his squealing tires behind. Carmen let out a shaky breath, Oh yeah that's gonna be in his nightmares for a long time. She chuckled before letting out a cry of pain as the blade cut deeper with her movements. Within a matter of seconds Auto bots swarmed her from all directions. Head count! There was Ratchet, Ironhide... She swore she saw a flash of yellow as Bee zoomed by. Wait, what was she doing again? She could hear him calling out orders as he made his way to her. His holoform made his way through debris- did he just step over the radio? Carmen leaned her head back to look through the car, yup that was the radio. How did the radio get out here? She brought her head back up and nearly head butted him.
"Heeyy Optimus, It's not as bad as it looks..." She blinked a few times as her vision got blurry. His muscular shape going out of focus.
"I think?" She just slumped her head back into the grass. The cold wet, very wet, why was it so wet? She turned her head sticking her cheek right into a pool of her own blood. Oh... That was why. Optimus' hands rested around her, never touching, but close enough for comfort. She could practically feel the anger and worry rolling off him in waves. She watched his optics, glowing the color only exotic waters were allowed to glow. And the way his dark hair swished across his forehead-
"Carmen." She hadn't even realized he had been talking. She also hadn't realized ratchets holoform had begun to scan her. She looked up at Optimus only using her eyes and raised her eyebrows expectantly.
"You had a direct order not to leave base-"
"Oh my god Optimus! Can this wait- OH SHIT!" Her head shot up and her hand shot out pointing at the car.
"Step mom! Rachel! Her first!" She winced and let out a pained whimper as the blade cut even deeper. A pair of warm hands pushed her back to her previous position. She stared up at him desperately. "Please Optimus." It was quiet and if it had been anyone else it would have gone unnoticed, but not with him.
"Ratchet, make sure her mother is alright." Ratchet looked like he was going to have a cow. He looked from the blade to Optimus back to the blade, all while gesturing with his hands and blabbering about throwing a wrench at someone. He finally stood up and marched past them to the other side of the car. Carmen slowly turned to Optimus.
"I didn't mean t-" He sent her a glare that would mean death for a Decepticon and night watch for an Autobot. She quickly looked away fiddling with the blade still protruding from her abdomen. His soft hands pulled hers away from the sharp reminder he had failed to protect her, and she could die for it. He sighed and inspected the wound himself. It went completely through her fragile body and dug into the ground beneath her. It was not a clean cut. He could already tell from the blood pooled around her. Ratchet trudged up from behind them, sat down in his previous spot and continued to scan the blade. Ratchet looked grim.
"The only reason she still lives, is because the blade was not removed. If removed she would bleed out in a matter of minutes." Carmen blinked and just stared at Ratchet. Minutes? They were definitely more than a few minutes away from any hospital... But she didn't exactly need a human hospital. She glanced up at Optimus watching the battle in his eyes. She tapped his hand and his eyes shifted to her.
"Think you could get me to the base in time?" The battle stopped and he looked to Ratchet. The medic scrunched his brow together and seemed to have a debate within. Finally he sighed.
"It's honestly her only chance." She looked to him shocked, the severity of her injury slapping her in the face.
"It's not that bad." She glanced at the discussion the two Autobots were having with their eyes. "It doesn't even hurt anymore!" She winced when Ratchet tapped on his data pad some more. She struggled to get a breath, hyperventilating, she realized.
"Optimus she's going into shock, we have to move her now." Carmen could feel soothing vibrations coming from Optimus' holoform, but also something underneath the vibrations... Like pain. He winced before looking at her for a moment.
"I will not lie to you, this will hurt." And with that shorthanded warning he pulled her body up and off the blade. She screamed. The comforting numbness she felt before all but disappeared, her entire body was on fire, tears streaming down her face freely. Optimus sprinted to his idle mode. He gave her one last reassuring look before shutting her in the cab. His engine revved to life and took off without hesitation. He spoke to her through the radio. Simple things, was she cold? Was she comfortable? When he stopped getting responses he kicked it into overdrive getting there in nearly half the time of the others. He transformed catching her body midair before setting her down with one of the human nurses. Lennox merely stared at Carmen as if she was a corpse already gone. He narrowed his eye to him, catching his attention. "She will live. Go!" Not as gentle as he would have liked but he would not lose Carmen, she would not be another human casualty in the Cybertronian war. She would live. He took an even breath.
