BFF/N stands for "your best friend's name"
I chose the name "Lexi" for a alternate friend name because it's so common and I figured most readers have an acquaintance named Lexi

Italicized words are your thoughts
_______

You're going to the pool with your best friends today for the millionth time this summer. You are excited to hang out with them and cool off from the scorching sun. But most of all, you're excited to see that cute lifeguard you have a crush on. He is so dreamy with his dark, tussled, summery hair. You've haven't even talked really... but you sneak glances at each other often.
You've only told your best friend in your group about him and she ships it so much.
"Guess who you get to see today!" She whispers to you but loud enough for everyone else to hear.
"Shhh" you scorn her.
"What was that?" your friend, Lexi inquires.
"Nothing." you spit, sneaking a harsh but playful look towards BFF/N.

You all walk towards the community pool in your slightly skimpy bathing suits with towels in arm or draped over your shoulders.
"Ugh it's actually 100 degrees today," Lexi says as she checks her phone.
"Ready to finish off my tan before school starts," another girl says.
BFF/N whispers to you, "I bet you're just excited to see your fruity life saver," with a grin.
You back-hand her arm, "Oh shut up."
She says, "You should pretend to drown today!"
You giggle, "No, you're stupid. He knows I can swim."
You instantly smell the chlorine as you approach the metal gate, opening it up.
She gabs on, "Ok, but you both obviously have a thing for each other so he would understand your ingenious idea that I supplied you with and give you mouth to mouth voluntarily... and then realize you're both really good kissers so you go on dates and you fall in love and get married on the beach..."
You're barely listening to her ramble as you walk over to 2 of the pool chairs and put your things on one.
"Oh God, he'd probably pick you up and twirl you around in the ocean and later you guys will adopt dolphins and visit them from your beach house, and live happily ever after."
You look for him against the sun glaring in your eyes but don't see him.
Looking in your bag, you suddenly realize you forgot a water bottle, and on a day like today, water is crucial.
"Ugh. I forgot my water," you say, getting money, "so I'm going to the vending machine, be right back."
"Oooh thirsty already, are we?" she remarks giddily and you shake your head.

You approach the vending machine and almost gasp. There he is.
The lifeguard you're so fond of is leaning against the side of the machine under the little roofed entrance to the clubhouse, drinking water. You walk slowly and then stop to think.

Oh no, I can't just walk up there now. He'll see me and leave. Or he'll talk to me and realize I'm a goof and never look at me again.
But I want to see what he would say to me. He's probably so cool and I'm sure he's easy to
talk to even if i screw up my-  ok i'm going-

You begin to walk towards the machine again, with more swagger, and by that; you pop your hip more as you walk as if to make your butt look bigger. You take your final steps to the vending machine and insert your dollar.
He hasn't noticed me yet. He's not even looking.
You take a step back to observe what number water is even though you already well know it's 21. You're only stepping back in hopes to catch his eye. He makes a glance at you and looks away again, then suddenly does a double take.
"Hey! I know you, I've seen you around constantly. Don't you come with your friends every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday?" He seems to bite back his words realizing his very specific observations but his glittering eyes question yours and you're suddenly starstruck.
"Y-Yeah we come here often," you say nervously.
"Yeah, I thought so," he says, a break of silence entering the conversation.
"Oh, what are you getting?" he asks, coming around to the same side of the machine.
"I'm just getting a water," you reach up to put in the numbers but the back of his strong hand blocks yours. You look up to him with a puzzled expression.
"A water it is then, ma'am," He punches in 21 and grabs the bottle as it comes out, handing it to you with a flourish. You can't help but giggle. You say, "Thank you."
He says, "Man, it's scorching out here today, good day to swim."
"Definitely, that's why I'm here," you say with a smirk, "must be hard to have to gaze at the water all day, unable to go in..." you add, glancing at the toned hip bone that was peeking from his white shirt and red shorts.
"Yeah..." He runs a hand through his hair and you take in his muscled arms, "it's rough on some days when I just really want to be in the water, take today for instance." He gazes at the water and you frown in empathy.
"Sorry 'bout that." You remark.
"Well that's ok," he continues, "I enjoy people watching." you catch him subtly (but not subtly enough) look you up and down out of the corner of your eye and feel your cheeks get hot; it wasn't just the sun.
He begins again, "So do you-"
"BRENDON!" a woman's voice calls out and your luscious lifeguard stiffens.
Brendon.
He cries out, "Oh shit, I lost track of time! Gotta start my shift. I'll see you around... I'm sorry, what's your name?"
"Y/N." you reply with a sweet smile.
"Awesome, catch you on the waves, dude!" he says with a terrible surfer voice and flashes a beautiful smile at you. You giggle as he shakes a "rock on" sign with his hand, walking to his post.

You walk back to your chair, your friend in the chair beside you. She turns to you, putting her phone down, "He proposed, I'm assuming." she says with absolute sarcastic seriousness.
"No, no, Brendon did not propose." you reply.
"Brendon!" she hisses, looking at him on his post and back to you, "I wouldn't think that would be his name."
You give her a judgmental look, "What? What's wrong with Brendon? Should we not get married now?" you inquire with a smirk.
"Oh no, you're meant to be... but it's kind of a dorky name."
"Bitch, does that look dorky?" you exclaim, looking at Brendon's figure.
"You're right, you're right... it's irrelevant, I guess."
"You're irrelevant."
"I'm whAT?" she exclaims, laughing.
You grin, "Oh yeah, completely useless. This is my summer fling."
"Ugh! Irrelevant" she contemplates the description, "Ok, if I'm so irrelevant... then what's this?"
She gets up and you suddenly get nervous, "Wait what are you doing?" you question her but she just walks away.
She makes her way towards the lifeguard tower and you're about to break your sunglasses by how tightly you are holding them.
She leans against one of the poles, looking up at Brendon flirtatiously.
She says something but you can't understand her, being too far away. She continues to talk and gestures to you without looking. You suddenly try to un-tense. Brendon looks at you quickly and you see a smirk pull at his lips but he looks back to BFF/N. He says something to her and she says something back followed by a  shrug. He looks at her a moment longer like he's about to say something but you see that he just responds with, "Yeah" and sits back in his seat; however, you can't make out his facial expression due to the glare.
She makes her way back to you with a surprised smile plastered to her face.
"BFF/N, what the hell did you just do?" you say, trying not to scream at her.
"I just proved my relevance." she sat down, brushing her hands off and crossing her legs.
"Oh my God." you exhale.

You look over at him as he stares at the water.
You decide to try to take your mind off of him and submerge yourself into a book. You slip on your glasses, opening the book.
The water glints off the pages and creates little light ripples on your face. You follow your character down a dark hallway and they see a door of cedar to the right, they are about to step inside-
A narrow shadow overcomes your book.
You pause for a moment, chilled suddenly by the shade and follow the shadow up to the beautiful body of Brendon.
"Um... hi." he says, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Hello, Brendon," you say cooly, putting your book down and sitting cross-legged now.
His toned abs stare down at you and you force yourself to look up to his eyes.
"So, um, I don't know how long you were planning on staying today, but I have a short couple shifts today and was wondering if... uh, you wanted to go, uh, get something to eat later?" Brendon asks with a nervous smile.
You hear a sudden screech to your right and your best friend claps a hand over her mouth.
You roll your eyes swiftly, looking back to Brendon,
"Sorry about her... um. Yeah... that..."
The words get stuck in your throat as you look into his eyes.
You clear your throat quietly, "that sounds really nice." and add an approving smile.
He purses his lips and rocks forward once.
"So I should be done today around 3 if you can wait that long for me," he smirks.
You grab your phone from your bag and check: 11:13... a little less than 4 hours till a date with Brendon.
"I think you're worth the wait," you say flirtatiously.
"So um," he runs his hand through his hair, "3 o'clock then."
You nod and scan his body quickly to look up to his face and smile.
He returns it and walks back to his post with a new swagger.

You look at your phone again and smile:
3 hours and 46 minutes until a date with Brendon the lifeguard.
