Field Trip

My eyes scanned the page as I was reading an intense chapter. Just then my mom called me.

"Jade, come down". I mentally said yes but didn't answer as I kept reading. "Jade! Downstairs now!" my mom shouted. I walked downstairs, still reading and almost fell as my feet skipped a step.

"Yes mom?" I said

"You know that your school is taking your class on a fieldtrip", she explained. "Well you going to it" she said smiling, as I stood there in confusion and shock.

"Wait. What! You couldn't have thought of asking me first!?" I whined.

"Jade stops acting like a baby, your 15 and barely have any friends, there's always a book in your face, and this will be good for you. You're going to go and it's final", she said sternly and turned around, continuing to clean the kitchen, while I stood there baffled.

One week passed and I still was upset at my mom for sending me on this trip without even asking me. What am I going to do? I still have so many books I want to read and I thought as I'm not going on the trip and there's no school, I could read and read and read. But no, now I'm going to this trip. Now the trip was only four days away.

Today at school our teacher gave us a little talk on where we were going and why.

"So as you all know the trip is 4 days away. We are going to go to an animal reserve, as Miss Bennett has got a friend working there and they said we could visit them for some days. We will be staying small dorms. We are going there to learn about the endangered animals there. At the end of the trip, you each need to hand in a report on what you saw and learned there." the whole class whined in chorus. "At the end of the day, I will hand out a list of the things you need to pack and get." Miss Bennett said and left the class, her heels clicking away as she walked down the hall.

Today was the day of the trip and I was not excited one bit. I had to start packing as I had to leave in an hour but no, I was glued to this book. My mom came in and groaned in annoyance.

"Miss Jade, you put that book down and start packing or I will snatch that book from you" she said as she tapped her feet waiting. I huffed and put it down.

"Now get moving and start packing" she said.

I had to pack enough things to last me seven days. I opened my suitcase, put about five pairs of clothes, two sets of night ware and my toiletries. That's basically what I needed.

Should I take a book? Maybe one

I took one book and put in it in. but there was for a few more. Should I? One more book won't hurt. So I took another book and put it and another and another. Now I had five books. That should be enough. I zipped up my suitcase and put it in the corner and quickly changed.

"The bus is here. I hope you finished packing!" my mom said from downstairs.
"I'm coming mom, calm down" I replied. I grabbed my bag and stood at the doorway. I looked at my room on last time. My comfy bed, my lavender walls and my bookshelves lined with book, standing proudly. I signed and went down. I hugged my mom goodbye.

"Have fun and make go make some REAL friends "she said and chuckled.

I climbed on the bus and saw a sea of faces. I knew some of them but never talked to them that much. I sat down near the window seat. It was getting dark and the stars were slowly appearing in the sky, one by one, making the dark blue sky shimmer more and more every time you looked at it. When I woke up, it morning and sunshine filled our bus

"We will reach in 30 minutes" Miss Bennett told.

We were all too sleepy to say anything but nod. As we went along the road, you could see bushes on either side of the road. The bus stopped and the Miss Bennett announced that we reached. We all gathered our bags and got down. We followed Miss Bennett and reached out dorms. We were 3 per dorm and to make it fair we had a draw and whichever number we got, we would be staying in that dorm. I got number three. I entered my dorm and saw two other girls already in it. I knew them briefly.

"Hey, you must be the third person who got number three" she said. I just nodded.

"I'm Ruby" "I'm Chloe"

"I'm Jade."

We introduced ourselves and exchanged our dislikes, likes and hobbies; after all I was going to be staying with them for the rest of the trip so why not try to spark some friendship now? It was now 10:00 am. We gathered for breakfast and ate at the trees. It was nice to sit outside, the wind blowing gently, the clouds racing after each other and the trees rustling whenever the wind blew. When we finished, Miss Bennett told us we could rest and at 3:00 we had to gather here. Ruby, Chloe and I headed back to our dorm.

"So what should we do? Play cards? any ideas? "Ruby asked enthusiastically

"Actually I'm going to take a small nap, didn't sleep well last night" Chloe said and crashed into bed.

"I'm going to read a bit" I said and went to fetch my books form my suitcase.

"Alright then, I'll go over to Violet's dorm and see what they're up to" Ruby said and left.

I removed my book and sat in a quiet corner and started reading. My eyes scanned the words. As I kept reading, I was not only reading it, I was imagining it, and whatever was happening was being enacted in my head, like a play.

"Guys come one, we need to gather under the trees where we ate breakfast" Ruby stormed in announcing it.

Already? Where did time go? I thought

We went and gathered there. We were the first ones there, but by the way Ruby had announced it, it sounded like we the last ones to gather there. One by one, people came and finally Miss Bennett spoke.

"We are going for a little walk and my friend who works here, Martha will explain about the nature here and how they keep everything in harmony. I want you to observe the nature as you need to submit a report about the nature and animals here" Miss Bennett said. "awww", the class whined when she said the word 'report'.
