I press the keys on my saxophone flawlessly to my schools version of alma mater. My brother, Ash, plays his part of alma mater, on his trumpet. The long version of alma mater though, our school has a long version and a short version. We play our instruments in a clearing in the woods behind our house.
We finish the song and put away our instruments in a little shed in our clearing.
"Race you home," my brother Ash asks anxiously, cause he has been running a lot in track.
I can't say no to a race either, so of course I have to say yes. "Ok, get ready to lose," I say without an ounce of fear for losing this race.
"3 2 1 Go," Ash shouts. And we are running.
I'm leading a little bit. We get to the creek that we put some wood over, as a bridge. And a run as fast as I can over and I trip over a branch. Slam! I hit the ground, my left wrist hits a rock I think.
All I hear is,"Zillah, are you ok?"
Which can only be my brother Ash asking. I don't bother to say anything and I just close my eyes in pain. But before I know it Mason, my oldest sibling, is carrying me. I'm not sure to where though. Maybe to my bed to rest. Or the car to go to the doctors.
But he sets me on a gerny. And I'm being rolled into an ambulance. Everything is so blurry in the ambulance. But I just try to fall asleep.
And I think I do, cause I wake up in a normal doctors room. My parents and siblings are looking at x-rays. That they must have taken while I was out. I hear the doctor saying,"The break is along here."
And everyone in my family reacts in their own way. I just gasp, then everyone looks at me. They all realized I am awake now. A nurse must have brought in a wrist cast while I was asleep.
It's pink too, Bailey my older sister she is older than Ash but younger than Mason, must have told them it was my favorite color. A nurse walks in and starts putting the cast on my wrist as, my family talks to the doctor. I don't like the way it feels, but I don't complain.
Last thing I remember, is I fell while racing Ash. I wish this hadn't happened, and that I didn't break my wrist. I want to cry, but I'm not going to, because Ash will feel like it is his fault. I know my brother all to well. It isn't his fault though it is mine.
I think I fall asleep again cause I wake up propped up in my bed, in my room, that I share with Bailey, on the second floor. Bailey is sitting on her bed, that is right across from mine. She is reading some book for school. I know cause, she hates reading, and she only reads for school. I stand up, Bailey glances over at me and then back down at her book. After she politely asks,"How are you feeling?"
I'm not gonna lie my wrist hurts still. Not as much though. I walk over to my dresser that my tv sit on, and I look through the blinds of my window. It's dark outside, and it's Thursday, so I have school tomorrow . "My wrist hurts, and tired.
I'm going to bed," I say. So I go lay down and go to sleep right away.
I wake up to my dog barking. I set my wrist on my bed and try to sit up. Then oww I think. I look at my wrist, I see the pink cast, and I remember. The doctors words just play over and over in my head, "The break is along here."
I hate this I think. I actually sit up now. I get up out of my bed, Bailey is still sleeping. I want to yell Arlo quit barking, but it must be early considering Bailey is asleep. Bailey wakes up 1st every morning, always.
I walk over to the door, and stare at myself in the mirror that hangs on it. My long brown hair that reaches my butt. Then my light green eyes. After my ugly dark pink cast. I look away, then open the door.
I walk down the stairs and see Arlo my, Australian Shepard. I walk fast down the stairs and then I hop onto the wood floors. I pet Arlo until he stops barking. He licks my face, then looks at my cast. Even Arlo seems confused.
I look at the clock that hangs on the wall, above my stove. 6:30. We are late! "Good boy Arlo," I almost sing.
Then I run up the stairs, not to fast though. I run into my room. "Bailey it's 6:30! We leave in 30 minutes!"
Bailey jumps out of her bed and runs to everyone else's room. She wakes them all up I assume, cause after Bailey walks out of my parents room.
Well, a stampede of my family comes running toward the stairs. I takes step back, and they all go right past me. Ash and Bailey go to the bathrooms. Ash goes to the upstairs bathroom and Bailey goes to the one on the 1st floor.
My mom and dad make some toast. And Mason is getting dressed. Which isn't a bad idea since, since I have to go to school today.
So I go into my room and pick out some clothes. I grab my army green tank top, a black skirt, and my army boots. I make sure Bailey is still in the bathroom then I get dressed.
I walk out and toast is done, I know by the smell. Also my parents are yelling, "Breakfast is ready!"
I know that everyone is going to go eat so, I'm going to go to the bathroom. I walk in and grab my toothbrush and, toothpaste. I brush my teeth but, when I'm almost done I hear, " Zilah come get your breakfast!"
I'm not sure who said it though, it was a boys voice though. So I spit out the toothpaste rinse my mouth out, and rush down the stairs.
I realize that Ash was the one who said it, because he is holding the last piece of toast. And of course Bailey and Mason are fighting over it. I'm not hungry at all, and since Bailey and Mason are fighting over my toast.
I take the piece of toast, and I give it to Arlo. Bailey and Mason just look at me. I have never done that, chose the dog over my siblings. Wow. "Thanks for the toast, Ash," I say.
Ash doesn't even look back at me, because he is racing up the stairs to get dressed.
I'm ready to go to school, Mason is the only other person who would be fine if they left for school now. Except he would have a smelly breathe all day.
I run back up the stairs and walk into my room. I grab my book bag and I sit down. It's only 6:50 when I glance at the clock. Which means we have to leave in 5 minutes! "We leave in 5 minutes," I yell.
I feel like the barer of bad news today, and I have only been awake for 20 minutes.
I put my book bag on and I slide down the railing. I love doing that it's so fun, I think. My mom is already rounding everyone up so they can get in the car.
