Rachel walked through the door of the empty choir room and took her seat in the front row. She was grateful that her English teacher had dismissed the class 5 minutes early as the extra time allowed her to avoid the crowded hallways that always accompanied the switching of classes. She just had time to arrange her sheet music neatly on her lap before the bell rang and the rest of the glee club members began to shuffle in. Once everyone had taken there seats, Mr. Shue moved to the front of the class. "Okay guys, I have a really exciting idea today that I think you all are really going to like," he announced. Clapping his hands once for emphasis. "Today you will be drawing partners out of a hat for our first annual duets competition!" A bright smile formed on Rachel's face while the rest of the club looked a little skeptical. "Come on guys!" Mr Shue added after seeing the clubs reactions. "It'll be great! Artie, why don't you draw first?" "Sure thing Mr. Shue." Artie nodded before wheeling up. He drew a slip of paper out of the top hat that Mr. Shue had retrieved from the costume room before class and read the name with a grin. "Mercedes." Mercedes high fived him as he wheeled back to his place, and Kurt stood up and pranced over to the hat. He pulled out his paper with a flourish and turned with a hand on his hip. "Satan... I mean Santana." Santana blew him a sarcastic kiss which quickly changed to her flipping him off when Mr. Shue turned his back briefly. This continued until Mike had drawn Brittany, Tina had drawn Puck and Finn, much to his dismay that he didn't get his girlfriend, drew Matt. "Well Quinn, I guess that just leaves you and me." Rachel said quietly, keeping her eyes firmly away from the blonde cheerleader. Quinn rolled her eyes, grabbed her bag and was the first one out the door when the bell rang. Mr. Shue yelled "Remember to get together with your partners and discuss songs for next class!" after the students as they filed out into the crowded school hallways.
*Tuesday Afternoon*
The next day after school found Kurt and Santana in Kurt's basement bedroom. With Kurt perched on his desk chair, staring disdainfully at Santana who was sprawled across his bed, still in her Cheerios uniform. "Okay Satan. As much as it pains me to relinquish my hold on our song choice, I highly doubt that you can pull off Broadway. So let's hear some of your ideas." Kurt announced. "Okay first of all Hummel," Santana replied. "I can pull off any song, anytime. But I'm not passing up this golden opportunity. It just so happens that I have the perfect song for us." "Oh? And what might that be?" Kurt asked, a hint of curiosity seeping into his voice. Santana signature HBIC smirk crossed her face as she sat up and plugged her iPod into Kurt's stereo.
*Thursday*
Kurt grinned in amusement as the band played the first notes of Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted Snake". Santana strutted up to the first row of chairs and began to sing.
Santana: He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
Girl don't play the fool--no
After a flawless high kick, Kurt mentally thanked Sue Sylvester and his brief stint with the Cheerios freshman year before launching into his lines.
Kurt: You're the one givin' up the love
Anytime he needs it
But you turn your back and then he's off and runnin' with the crowd
You're the one to sacrifice
Anything to please him
Do you really think he thinks about you when he's out
Until now they had simply been strutting around but as they both began to sing the chorus they broke out into fast paced choreography that had even Rachel Berry looking impressed. Kurt glanced over at Santana and they shared the smirk of friendship in a way that only two self proclaimed divas can. "Look at that," Kurt smiled to himself. "I'm actually performing with the devil herself, and enjoying myself."
Santana and Kurt: He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
He's been tellin' lies
He's a lover boy at play
He don't play by rules
Oh oh oh
Girl don't play the fool--no
Santana: It was only late last night
He was out there sneakin'
Then he called you up to check Kurt and Santana: that you were waiting by the phone
Kurt: All the world's a candy store
He's been trick or treatin'
When it comes to true love girl Kurt and Santana: with him there's no one home
He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
He's been tellin' lies
Santana: He's a lover boy at play
He don't play by rules
Oh oh oh
Kurt: Girl don't play the fool--no
Santana: You could find somebody better girl
He's c-cold as ice
As cold as ice
He's cold as ice
He's cold as ice
Stay away from him girl
Kurt: C-c-c-cold hearted uh, ah, ah
C-c-c-cold hearted sssnake
Santana and Kurt: He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
He's been tellin' lies
He's a lover boy at play
He don't play by rules
Oh oh oh --Girl don't play the fool-no
Into his eyes
Oh oh oh
He's a cold-hearted snake
The performance had gone perfectly. The glee club jumped up to congratulate them while Mr. Shue laughed and clapped loudly from his seat on one of the choir room's stools. "Wow guys!" Mr. Schuester said, "That was an amazing first performance! Everybody give it up once again for Santana and Kurt!" The club applauded loudly they sat down. "I know that set the bar pretty high, but Puck and Tina, you're up!" The pair jumped up and after cueing the band, began a surprisingly impressive version of Joan Jett's "I love rock and roll". When they were done everybody applauded the unlikely yet successful partnership. Mr. Shue stood up, "Okay guys one more for today and then we're done. The rest of you can go next day." He nodded at Mike and Brittany, and the two dancers put on a very entertaining performance of "Your love is my drug" by Ke$ha. The fun high energy performance was the perfect way to end off the day.
