The water was coming.
John could hear it rushing down the pipes, the sound echoing off the walls like cruel laughter. John turned to Sherlock. Sherlock's face was a mask of shock.

"What do we do?" John said, his voice cracking. He knew it had been a bad idea coming into the pipes. But, of course, Sherlock had been stubborn.

Sherlock seemed to snap out of his daze when he heard the dread in John's voice. He whipped his head around, evaluating their options. He spotted something.
"John. Look."

John spotted the manhole and nodded.

"You go up first. You're better at this than me." John said.

Sherlock scaled the ladder quickly. He pushed at the drain. "It's not opening."

"What? Okay, just keep trying."

Sherlock continued to push and search for a solution as the rushing sound got closer.

"We're going to die." John's voice was barely audible.

Sherlock turned his head suddenly. "Don't say that. Don't you dare. I'm going to make it out of this John Watson and so are you. I will not live in a world without you. Without you I will not survive so do not leave me." He shouted.

John stared at him. "Alright. Alright." He said.

"Thank you." Sherlock went back to the drain. He struggled with it. Finally he seemed to be making some progress.

The water rounded the corner.

"Sherlock!" John shouted.

"I've got it!" The lid popped off. Sherlock scrambled up and then pulled John up with him, just as the water went by. John felt it rush past his toes.

The pair of them collapsed on the pavement, breathing heavily. They lay there for several seconds.

"John, will you marry me?" Sherlock said.

John turned his head to face him. He shrugged. "Yeah, alright."

They smiled stupidly at each other as strangers walked past staring at the two men lying in the street.
