A golden she-cat padded throughout the StarClan grounds. The spots that speckled her pelt looked as white as snow. Swishing her fluffy tail, she trotted down a grassy hill toward the shadows beyond. She knew what she was attempting was extremely dangerous, but she was the only cat to volunteer.
Treading ever so closer to the shadowy forest beyond, she twitched her ear in surprise and looked back to see another golden she-cat, this one with pure gold fur, no white at all, scampering down the hill toward her.
Surprise swept over her. "Fawnstep? What are you doing here?"
Fawnstep smiled. "I'm here to help. You only just joined StarClan, you shouldn't have to complete this task."
"Then where is Blackpaw?"
"He's with Talonclaw. And even if he wasn't, he could defend himself in any ambush."
The white-spotted she-cat purred. "I wouldn't dare doubt that."
Fawnstep purred as well, but then her gaze softened into sympathy. "I feel bad for you, Sparrowsong. You just escaped a war, and now you've been pulled back into one."
Sparrowsong looked down at her paws, and then into the Dark Forest which was only a few pawsteps ahead.
"I'd do anything to help the Clans."
"But what if something happens to..." Fawnstep paused and swallowed, fear returning to her revealing amber gaze. "Happens to you?"
Sparrowsong licked the she-cat's ear, trying to calm her. "We couldn't be separated again. Not even death can keep siblings apart forever."
Fawnstep shifted closer to Sparrowsong as the breeze picked up, blowing cold air toward the two she-cats and lifting their fur. "I'm so glad you're back. I've been so afraid; you were always the brave one."
"I changed so much when... you-know-what happened. You wouldn't be able to recognize me if you saw how much confidence I lost without you by my side. It didn't even return when Silverwing thought of that plan to save the kits; although I am proud of her, which must have brought some faith back."
Fawnstep brushed Sparrowsong's cheek with her own. "You were an excellent mentor. I wish I could've joined you."
Sparrowsong returned her gaze to the Dark Forest. "You finished Blackpaw's training, which is as good as what I did for Silverwing. But right now, if we want to help anyone, we have to complete this mission."
Fawnstep also turned her gaze to the Dark Forest; the darkness pulsing from it caused both of them to shiver. They gave each other a wary glance before padding closely together into the evil forest, the shadows vanquishing the natural glow of their star-speckled pelts.
Sorry for the short prologue! The first chapter will be much longer.
