Chapter 1

Darkness

~~~~~~~~~~
The sunlight spilling into the house did little to light up the first room. It just lit up the corridor leading to it. Fortunately, however, there was a lightswitch just before entering the room. Nath turned on the switch, and after a few seconds of flickering the lights came on.
The room, which seems to be an atrium to the rest of the house, had dark wooden floors with cream walls. Opposite the front door was a large set of double doors on the left, and a staircase leading upwards to a darkened floor above. To the left and right were more, single doors.
"Great, we dont have to use our phones for light. That's good."
"Yeah, my battery's only at 30%, and if it ra-" Brian started before hearing a bang, coming from the front entrance. They spun around, alarmed, to see the front door had closed. Brian jogged over to the doors and pushed them, then pulled them. They were stuck tight.
"Everything okay there Brian, what happened?" Nath called to him. He gritted his teeth in annoyance.
"The doors closed on us, dummy. Must have been the wind. I think it's pushed something heavy in front of the door too, I can't open it." He replied, kicking the door for good measure.
"Bullshit. It wasn't windy when we came here, and it can't have suddenly picked up so much to blow a door closed in a few minutes. Let me try." Nath said, knocking Brian out of the way and pushing with all his might. The door stayed shut.
"Shit, it's really closed tight." He said, breathing heavily from the effort.
"What if someone locked us in here?" Bane asked quietly from behind him.
"Wow, that's worse than Brians idea. Did you see anybody outside when we came in? Because I sure didn't. Besides, why would someone want to lock us in here?" Nath said with a laugh, turning towards him. Bane frowned.
"No, not from outside. I meant-" He was cut off by a loud crash, coming from the door on the right. All three of them turned towards the sound, frozen in shock. Brian looked at the others, before approaching the door.
"H-hey! Where are you going?" Nath called.
"I'm checking out what that was. Stay here with Bane, he looks like he's about to faint." He said with a smirk, noting Bane's pale face and dizzy posture. He turned, and went through the door.
The next corridor was about three metres long, with a door at he end and in the middle on the left. He tried that door first, but found it to be locked. He tried the one at the end, finding it unlocked, and stepped inside.
The room was practically split into two halves.  On the right was a living room area, the floor the same dark wood that covered the halls, with stools surrounding a low coffee table on the table was a blue tablecloth with a white vase on top, in which were daisy-like flowers with blue petals. There was also a remote on the table, which was most likely connected to the TV mounted on the wall. Brian picked it up and pressed a few buttons, but either it wasn't connected or it didn't work. He turned it over, seeing the back stuck on with brown tape. He put it back down and looked around this side of the room. Opposite the TV was a picture of a sunset, with birds flying in the background. The picture was quite odd, as all the colours were different shades of blue, but that was part of the charm he guessed.
The other side was a kitchen, with a classic monochrome tiling and various cupboards filled with basic things like sugar, flour, bread and butter. There was also a fridge, oven and a sink on the back side of the room. To the left was more, though empty, cupboards, a old, wooden door and an open china display case. On the floor was a shattered plate.
"That must have been what caused the noise. Stupid wi-" He stopped, and tuned around, facing the window. It was completely covered. He looked around, at the door next to the cabinet. He thought even more that it would be impossible for the wind to do anything. Then, what had happened?
A feeling of unease settled around Brian. He had the horrid feeling he wasn't alone in the room. His eyes fell on the shattered plate, and picked up the longest and sharpest shard, in case he need for a weapon arose. He didn't quite know why he had that feeling, it seemed primal, animalistic, but he was going to go with his gut feeling, that something bad and evil was happening
He didn't want to stay in the room any longer. He walked out and passed the middle door without a second glance, and burst into the atrium. Shock, confusion, anger, fear and worry cycled through his brain. Nath and Bane had vanished.
"Nath? Bane? Hello? Where are you guys?" Brian shouted, walking to the centre and looked around. The upstairs room was still dark, so he though it was safe to assume they weren't there. Maybe they had got the door open somehow and left? He hoped not, he didn't want to be left behind. He tried the front door, but it was as stuck as ever, with no sign it had forcefully been opened.
Next he tried the set of double doors next to the stairs, but they were locked. He found the right door to be open, however, so he went through.
There was a door in the middle, like the corridor to the left, but it was also locked, so he carried on further down the hall.
Though one of the doors were locked, the other revealed a pretty simple bathroom, with a wall separating the toilet and a sink area, wih cabinets and a large mirror.He looked around the toilet, but there was nothing of interest to note. . In one of the cupboards on the other side he found a simple first aid kit, with some bandages, alcohol for cleaning wounds and plasters, so he took that, but apart from that there was nothing of interest.
He walked back to the center to, calling out his friends names. He stopped at the foot of the stairs.
"They must be up here. They wouldn't have left you alone in this creepy house. It's just a joke. A prank that's gone too far. It was most likely Nath's idea. God, I'm going to punch him when I find him. Okay, you can do this." He murmured to himself, psyching himself up the courage to go into the darkness. He hesitated for a second longer, before climbing the stairs.
