A long life

It had been two weeks after I got the letter. It was also two weeks sooner that my dog T-Bone was to meet his end. His breathing hadn't been all that great. He was a 12 year old golden retriever, so he was bound to go anytime now. It was now July 2nd, which meant huge Costco haul day. I came home that day with four huge bags filled with food. It was a normal day, so when I opened the door there should have been a mass of golden fur barreling towards me.
There wasn't.
I dropped all of the bags at once and ran into the family room. T-bone was slumped on his bed, his eyes fluttering. I stuttered up to him. He attempted to wag his tail, but then stopped. I patted him on his side. He looked up and then took in one, deep breath.
Then he was gone.
