Fred was living the same as always. Alone, living under the canopy of a restaurant. If anything, the bullying has gotten worse. People make fun of him for trying to be cool. Fred feels really bad, but as always, glad he's still himself.
One day while Fred was at the restaurant, a newspaper fell on his head. Fred looked at it. It was "The Potatoville Newspaper. News Every Potato Can Rely On". He took a look at it. One of the first entries was titled "Miranda and Bill Potato Still Alive!" Miranda and Bill were Fred's parents names. He started reading it and this is what the article said:
"Miranda and Bill Potato are still alive. Everyone thought they died in the tragic potato car accident where there were supposedly no survivors, but that was wrong. They had just had their son, Fred Potato, right before the tragedy happened. They were going to buy Fred some new clothes and toys, but they never made it back. They told an interviewer that they got lost and couldn't find their way back, but they knew that Fred would do alright on his own. That's it for today's news article. Tune in next week for some info on the Great Potato Parade!"
Fred was in awe. Were his parents really alive? Did they really think that he would do okay on his own? Fred just wished that he would've known before. He would've run away and found them. He wished that he had someone to support him through this tough time.
Later that night, while Fred was under the canopy, he heard something from inside the restaurant, so he turned around and looked. Inside was a tv, with a news reporter on it, showing videos of people running around in the forests of Potatoville. They looked determined. Fred had no idea who they were or what they were trying to do. Then he took a closer look. It was his parents! Were they looking for him? Fred got very excited.
The next day at potato school, people treated him differently. They must've watched the news. There was a girl named Wendy. She came up to Fred.
"Hey Fred," she said. "Hey, I watched the news last night, and heard about your parents. Is it true that they got in the accident just a couple days after you were born?"
"Yes, it's true. When I had them around, they were the only people who believed in me. I wish I had them now. Someone to help me during these tough times. Someone to hold me when I'm feeling down." Fred replied.
"I feel really bad about the way you've been treated, and about the way I've treated you. Now that I know what happened, and how you've been living without parents or friends, all by yourself, under the canopy of a restaurant, I want to make it up to you." said Wendy.
"How are you going to do that?" asked Fred. "My life has always been a wreck, but now that my parents might possibly be alive, I need to find them. Tell them I'm okay and that I've missed them and that I, that I, that I um,"
"That you what Fred?"
"That I love them."
"That's how I'm going to make it up to you."
"How?" asked Fred.
"By helping you find your family. Look, I know you only knew them for a couple of days, but you need them."
"You're right. I do. Thanks Wendy!"
"Anytime!"
That night after potato school, Fred and Wendy sneaked out to the forests, knowing that if they are seen, they'll go to the Potatoville Prison. They walked around with caution, knowing that one wrong move would be resolved with their death.
"Wendy, we should go back. I don't want my parents to know that I died looking for them. They'll take it personally and never forgive themselves."
"Fred, I know you're feeling depressed, and you're feeling like you can't do it anymore, but think about what your parents would say. Would they want you to give up?" Wendy asked.
"No."
"So then what are you going to do?"
"Find my parents, and tell them I'm alright and how much I love them."
"C'mon Fred, lets go!"
They both quietly walked around the forest, trying hard not to step on any sticks or make any noise. It was dark out, so they couldn't see where were going. Just one wrong step could kill them. Then Wendy fell off a cliff.
