"Hey, man!" a familiar low voice called out. I grinned up into the smiling face of my best friend, lifting up a fist and bumping it into his, drawling a greeting back at him. I was sprawled out on the sofa in my living room, next to the window, where a cool breeze danced in. I was staying at our lake house, where the weather was guaranteed to be refreshing just as always. It was the perfect place to be when I was feeling the way I was.

"Hey, Roberts, man," I said pushing myself over a little to make space for him on the couch. He chuckled and brushed some broken chips and crumbs off the seat before sitting down on it. I rolled my eyes but said nothing to his girly pickiness and looked back to my laptop. He raised his eyebrows when he saw a chat box open featuring the typical blonde at the top. I ignored his skepticism deliberately and typed away on it.

Sweetstacie21: Sooo... (flirtatious smile)I love your new profile pic <3

I rolled my eyes. This girl was already turning me off, and this was the first time I talked to her. I sighed. I knew there was a reason I never replied to her completely unoriginal messages. But after she liked practically everything I posted...Well actually, I still shouldn't have bothered. I lazily typed back "You know it babe" without hesitation. I'd already answered that one enough times just in the past half hour to not need any time to flirt back. And Brent knew it by the way he rolled his eyes and then finally cleared his throat.

I smiled a little at that. "So are we finally getting to the part where you tell me what the hell it is you're here for?" I say, not bothering to look up at him from my supremely engaging conversation.

He scowled a little before saying, "Well you know my friend Jackson lives around this area." I nod. "Well he's having a party and invited me seeing as I was here..." I nod again. "Well. He's an old friend..." I raise an eyebrow. "...And so if you would mind laying off a little tonight." I let out a cold laugh, finally looking up at him.

He frowned at my expression. "What?"

I shook my head and smiled a little before saying a little bitterly, "It's just that it wasn't you asking me to come. You knew it was a party and knew I would. It was you asking me not to do his sister."

He sighed. "Nick..."

I roll my eyes and give him a friendly shove, shaking off my mood. "No worries, man. Tonight's gonna turn up!" He frowned as if that wasn't reassurance at all to which I just shook my head a little before sighing and replying as seriously as I could, "Don't worry. I can be good. I'm smarter than I look."

He rolled his eyes at that one. "Well that's not hard to accomplish..."

I shoved him for real and he laughed and said, "Thanks, bro" before walking away.

I flexed my jaw and bit back a groan as he left. Shaking my head, I exited out of my conversation with Barbie and texted Aubrey, my supremely hot friend with benefits. At least she always flirted creatively.

I frowned to myself. Maybe that would be all I needed to snap out of my mood.
