My Choice

I turned my head slowly, petrified.  Would Hanji tell him? She clapped her hands together with purpose.

“Levi dear, just in time. Asea has something very important she would like to say to you."  .....She's making me say it instead. Wonderful. Just what I needed.

My eyes and lips were still a bit red from crying, and I was positive that I looked like an absolute mess. Still, I looked him straight in the eye defiantly and said, “Hanji won't let me fight." I saw his eyes register the shock, but his expression as a whole didn't change.  His head whipped toward Hanji, glaring. “Why won't you let her fight?"  Hanji pursed her lips once again, and I once again returned the responsibility to her.  After a few silent seconds,  she sighed in submission.

“Asea has mildly severe scoliosis in the upper bend of her back.  If we allow her fight, the chances are that the bend will increase, causing intense pain, eventually rupturing a vital organ, causing her to die." After she said her mind, she looked at the ground, seemingly ashamed.  I glared daggers at the back of her head; she didn't need to make it sound so dramatic.  I glanced at Levi, wondering what he would say about the situation.

Levi was thoughtful for a moment, but eventually he spoke.  “Does she want to fight? Does she feel the need to?" I nodded enthusiastically, but Zoe wasn't as excited.  “Yes she does, butー"

“Then it's not your place to decide. Finish the check up, and quickly move on." With that said, he glanced at me, turned around, and left the room, closing the door behind him.

No way. Did he just say that? I sighed In relief. I didn't quite think he'd understand, but he did. He would let me complete my goal.  I looked up at Hanji triumphantly, and maybe a bit proud; she looked me in the eyes and sighed in reply.  “Asea, if you die, then it will be useless."  I raised an eyebrow at her statement.

“I'm weak, I'm sure I wouldn't make much of a difference. Still, isn't there something you can do to prolong my death?"

“We can give you a brace, but eventually you'll need surgery and we don't have the medical advancement to insure you'll survive." She gave me a last worried look before she walked to a closet and pulled out a padded metal back brace.  “Put this on under your shirt," she said, handing it to me.  I unbuttoned my shirt, pulling it off.  Hanji helped me strap it on, and soon I was ready to go.  The brace was uncomfortable; the padding helped a bit, though the metal poked me here and there.

“Thank you, Hanji!" I smiled, waving to her, holding the door open. She returned the wave as I left the room, entering the hallway and calling the next person in line.  All I had to worry about now was hiding my choice.
