I tucked my phone into the pocket of my sweats, ignoring its incessant buzzing as I approached the kitchen. The colder atmosphere sent an elevated shiver down my spine that made me pull down the cuffs of my long-sleeved shirt. It was a content kind of chill, one that reflected my equanimity rather than discomfort. It also reminded me how close it was to spring, my favorite season.
A simple pleasure of mine was observing the subtle ways the Team implemented their own personal styles to match the changing seasons. As we abandoned winter and moved toward warmer months, I could already picture Karen and M'gann in pastels and Robin wandering around the Cave in cargo shorts. I also feared the day Cassandra and Barbara would insist on taking me shopping for a new closet, the same as they had last year.
I was happy to discover the kitchen was otherwise empty, allowing me to continue my morning in peace a little while longer. With all of the chaos from the past few months, it almost struck me as pathetic that eating breakfast in solitude was one of the only ways I could obtain an inkling of relaxation. In fact, the Cave was rather silent today, questionably so. I supposed I never realized just how often everyone was out in the field, or back home with their families, or quite literally anywhere else in the world.
It wasn't lonely, though. In a place as hectic as the Cave, I appreciated any amount of privacy I could get.
I stopped in the lounge to turn on the television and rolled my eyes when the first thing I saw was G. Gordon Godfrey's hideous mug. I silently cursed whoever had been watching the news last night before lifting the remote control to change the channel, until the headline at the bottom of the screen caught my eye.
[ EARTH-MARS COM-SAT: CAPE CANAVERAL ]
Hesitantly, I turned up the volume before placing the remote on the back of the couch. Half of my attention remained on the announcement as I returned to the kitchen to find something to eat. It wasn't a surprise that a project of this magnitude had already captured the attention of GBS. True, this satellite was a big deal, but from what I remembered, it was being executed on the down-low. The only other time I'd heard about it was maybe a month ago when Nightwing mentioned it while we were going through a few of the Team's mission files. As the screen cut to the launch site for the satellite, I noticed it appeared somewhat, if not entirely, completed.
