Patient Alaska

California used the barrel of his gun to smash a window- the fastest and least dirty way to get us out of this place. We didn't speak- we didn't need to. In the brief time that we had really got to know each other, we discovered that we were a perfect team.   After grabbing a dirty rag and wiping the window sill clear of glass, California gave my a boost so I could climb out of the basement. Being fairly tall at 6’3, he found it easy enough to climb out of the gap he had made.

I breathed slowly as we sat on the floor of the dirty alley. I needed new clothes, and from the looks of California, he did too. And sleep, that would be nice. That would be really nice.

After a few moments he climbed up from his butt, standing wearily, extending a hand to help me up. He easily pulled me up. He was probably fifty pounds heavier than me- just because he was taller and muscular. I stand at a tiny five feet five for a boy, and I’m pretty skinny, probably not even weighing in at a hundred pounds.

We walked for a few miles, talking in a relaxed fashion about all that had happened to each of us since we last spoke. He had hooked up with a bunch of girls, and hadn't seen the authorities for weeks. Apparently, they thought he was dead. Fun.

Anyway. He also gave me a very useful piece of information- the other patients were nearby. According to him, when we first arrived at the Facility, they had injected chips into our arms which recorded exactly where we were if we escaped. He had cut his out- which was why they thought he was dead. That would explain how they always seemed to find me. So, apparently, he had teamed up with Patient Phoenix, and they usually stayed together. She was a tech genius, and she could track us all down from a laptop she had stolen. We were all alive and fine, and actually all pretty close together, which was a little surprising. That’s how I ran into him- he had set it all up. I rolled my eyes at the realisation- typical Cali. Phoenix was pretty cool, and it was good that she was on our side, or we’d be screwed. California reported that Phoenix and he had recently been hiding in an apartment that was long abandoned, whilst trying to get the group together.

We’d get there before nightfall, apparently. The sun was beginning to set, so I could only take that to mean that we were close. Soon we came to the worse part of the city, where everything was dirty and old. From all the smashed windows and lack of lights, I guessed that not very many people lived here anymore. Good. Less people to notice our strange comings and goings.

We quickly came to the derelict tower block. There was probably six or seven floors- not very tall, and not well maintained whatsoever. I noticed it smelt even worse than in the abandoned hotel- it smelt of salt, piss, beer and sweat. Disgusting. I almost gagged.

California pushed open the battered door that was repaired with odd planks of wood crookedly nailed into the metal door.

Inside smelled worse than outside. The corridor was completely trashed, random hunks of metal, wood and rock sprawled down the hallway, the pictures that had once sat on the wall spray painted or completely shredded.  I saw a dead cat and several dead mice on our way down the corridor.

Eww.

California led me down the hallway until we reached the last door. Down here, it looked like someone had actually made an effort to clear away the empty coca cola cans, wrappers for candy, bricks and the rest of the assorted mess. The door actually looked in half-decent condition, in that it was exactly that. Most of the other doors barely hung on by one hinge, or were missing or broken, but this door stood in its frame, closed, boarded up with bits of wood that were probably from the rubbish dumping ground of a floor. So California had probably done this, and the one outside, too. It made sense- Phoenix could sit in bed for days on her laptop, but California? He hated resting, and he couldn't sit still. While Phoenix had been hacking and finding us, California had most likely been the one to search for food or go scouting for furniture- that was more apparent when we went inside.

Make-do mixed and matched furniture decorated the small living room- a pink, old-fashioned sofa, a pastel green table, one yellow chair, one blue chair, a red rug… The floor was ruined though, stained, a few floorboards actually ripped out, and the walls were bare and yellowing from what should have been a clinical white.

“Phoenix?” he called out. Apparently they hadn't shared names either, or maybe he just didn't want me to find out what her name was. Neither really mattered, I guess I just found that interesting.

I glanced around once more, as he headed past one of the only three doors that came off of this room. I heard some movement, and a clash, but I didn't follow him in.

He came out moments later, carrying a laptop. “She’s gone.” he said quietly, almost inaudibly. To me, he sounded broken- I’ve never heard him like this, even when he first came to the Facility. He was always so… Happy. He let out a deep breath, and plonked down on the battered sofa, quickly turning the laptop on, waiting for it to load. When it finally did, he opened up several different folders, then finally a programme opened. I went to sit down next to him. He was slowly typing, and from the looks of it, he was simply typing both of their names. After a handful of painfully long seconds, the screen was flooded with white.

“She told me that if anything happened and she had to leave, she’d leave a clue on the computer for me.” He told me softly.

After another handful of slow moments, words in coding format appeared, green and slick.

They’ve found us. Meet me at the first place. Computer will wipe all data after this. Bring it to me.

The computer screen went black and California just sat there, staring into space for an undetermined time- maybe two minutes, maybe ten. I couldn't be sure.

After several more moments, I looked at him carefully. “Come on then, lets go find your girlfriend.” I said, standing up.

“She’s not my girlfriend!”

I just laughed as I helped him up.
