The Alpha's Curse

One day. I'm granted one day a month to be in my original form. Everything is so different. I used to be one of those girls who talked about boys and went shopping. Now I'm a stranger in my own world.

New Orleans is a constantly part when night falls. The bars are slammed pack. Wide open doors allow the sweet jazz music to fill the streets. Laughter and small talk fills the time when musicians are changing. The aroma of food fills the air.

For one day. I get to enjoy this. I get to try to pick up where I was last. I could try to go on a date. Who am I kidding? It was pointless to try to go on a date. I had twenty-four hours. No human boy would understand that.

I make my way into Cousin Louie's Bar. A tall blonde is already standing on the bar, dancing. People clap as she dances to the music played by her boyfriend, Louie. I clapped as the music started to slow down. She looked at me, grinning from ear to ear.

Lila hopped down off the bar and made her way towards me. She threw her arms around me. “Hello, little wolf!”

I laughed. “Hello, witchy.”

Lila was the only one, besides Louie, who knew about my curse. It didn't bother either of them. They were both raised in witch families, so magic and curses were nothing new to them. Countless times they have both tried to break my curse. Not once have either of them managed to come close. The one who had cursed me has much more power than any of us had initially thought.

“Richie, get us a big bowl of gumbo and a glass of beer!” Lila calls out to the bartender.

Before I know it, I'm sitting down at the bar eating some gumbo. It's been a month since I have eaten real food. Sure they have tried to feed me to the best than can, but when you are stuck as a wolf you don't exactly have taste buds. Pretty much any slop you can muster up tastes like a five star meal.

Louie comes up, giving me a big kiss on the cheek. He isn't what you would expect. His Asian features were sharp and striking. Sparkling eyes drew you in. His black hair was spiked up and usually streaked with some bright color. The color today seemed to be hot pink. If you saw him on any other street in America you would think that he was gay. But this is New Orleans! He just fits in with the rest of the outrageous crowd.

“Look at you! Just as beautiful as last month!” he says, looking me up and down.

I give him a gentle shove. “Your girlfriend is right next to us!”

He chuckles. “She knows that I love her.”

“Damn straight.” Lila says, leaning over me to give him a kiss on the lips. “Now hurry up so we can go party!”

I scarfed down the rest of the food, and chugged the rest of my beer. Pretty soon Louie is back to playing his trumpet. I join Lila on top of the bar dancing.

I may not get to be human for most of the year, but when I am I sure make the most of it.

Four am, we shut the bar down. Empty beer bottles and glasses were laying all over the place. It looked as if a bomb went off in here.

I begin to pick up stuff when Louie stops me, “Don't worry about it. Clean up crew will be here in the morning.”

We made our way into the streets. Some of the bars were still open, but most had shut down for the night...or rather morning. Drunken people stumbled as they made their way home. A few couples could be found in alleys making the most of the rest of the night.

The full moon lit up the streets, making this place look more magical than it probably is. When the sun was up, it would show how dirty it really was. For now, we could just pretend that it was in pristine condition.

I froze as we grew closer to the house the three of us shared. A smell filled my nostrils. This can't be a good sign.

“What's the matter?”

“Wolves.” I replied.
