I sat in front of the TV watching Sesame Street when I heard a car pull into the driveway. I quickly turned off the TV and ran to the back door to greet my mom. She was gone for two weeks this time. I hated that she had to leave for work so much, but as long as I got her in the end I was fine with her being gone a bit.
I swung open the door and saw my mom smiling as she opened her car door. She looked at me with an adoring face and opened her arms for me. I ran down the stairs and jumped into her arms and she lifted me up. She hugged me tightly and apologized for being gone so long.
"It's okay mommy, your home now. I missed you so much!" I squealed. She hugged me tighter and carried me inside. My dad was waiting inside with a cake me and him made earlier today. My mom put me down and ran over and kissed my dad.
"Phil, thank you! Oh I missed you both so much!" She exclaimed taking in our smiling faces. Mommy is very pretty. She has long straight black hair and bright green eyes. I got her green eyes but my dads brown hair.We all ate dinner, my dad turned on the fireplace and my mom made for chocolate for me. We all piled onto the couch and watched a movie. When it finished I hugged my mom and dad.
"Goodnight mommy, I love you." I said as I hugged her."I love you too, sweetie. I'll see you tomorrow" She promised.
"I love you too pumpkin," my dad added patting my hair. I went upstairs and got into my bed.
I fell asleep rather quickly, but woke up a couple hours later when I heard creaking coming from downstairs. My dad often got up at night to go to the bathroom so I went back to sleep. I woke up again when I heard someone coming up the stairs slowly. I got nervous as I thought of monsters coming to get me.
But mommy always said there's no such thing as monsters though so I just sat and watched the door. The creaking continued and I heard feet walk closer to my room. It stopped in front of my door and I almost called out to ask who was there. But dad always said never to answer a door if I didn't know who was outside. But I got out of bed nonetheless. I tip-toed over to my door being careful to not trip over any of my toys. Then I locked it and ran into my closet quietly closing it behind me. I grabbed a hanger and waited. A couple minutes later I heard someone jiggling my door handle. Then I heard knocking on the door, then pounding. I would have opened it, but my mom and dad both said if they were knocking on my door they would call out to make sure it was them.
No one called out.
I started shaking. Had someone broke into our house? Was it a monster? A burglar? I held onto the hanger shivering and afraid. The pounding got louder and louder until suddenly... it stopped. If someone was trying to get in they gave up. I started to stand up when I saw a shadow of someone walking in my room.
Luckily the blinds on my closet door were shut so I could see out but no one could see in. The person walked around my room and stopped at my bed. I looked at it and saw my bed was unmade. He must know I was here. My whole body was shaking as I watched him look under the bed. Then he looked at the closet. If there was light I could make out what he looked like. They started slowly walking towards the closet. Then-Thank God- a car drove past and I saw the face.
I almost wished I hadn't seen it though. His face was worn in and he had slicked back oily hair with black eyes. His face had scars on it and his mouth was in a crooked smile. He had on a dirty black shirt and matching black pants. In his hand he held something that looked like what my mom used to cook. Worst of all he had a red blotch on his forehead. I don't think that's kool-aid. I sat down and shifted as silently as humanly possible behind my dirty laundry bin so you couldn't see me. Then I took a shirt from it and draped it across the top of it so if you could see me before, now you couldn't.
Next I grabbed a hanger on the floor to defend myself with. I gripped it so tightly it hurt, but I held on. Then the closet door was whipped open and I stopped breathing. I couldn't see the man anymore and I was glad. Certainly if I could I would be balling right now. I heard his jagged breathing as he probably searched for me. I fought not to cry or breath for fear he would notice me. After what felt like hours I heard him leaving and his footsteps fading away. I didn't dare move in case he was still here. I stayed in my hiding spot all night and all morning. My stomach grumbled and my hand ached from gripping the hanger. In the afternoon (I think) I heard police sirens and heard footsteps all around the house. Someone came into my room I guess saw the open closet and someone asked, "Is anyone in there?" I decided to take a risk and I peeked out.
I saw a police man, gun in hand, his face tight with worry and immediately recognized my uncle. I heaved a sigh of relief and jumped out of my hiding spot. My uncle jumped back in surprise and nearly shot me with his gun. Then he registered it was me and color fled into his face.
"Camille?" He questioned tearing up. "Oh god," he whispered. Then he grabbed my arm and dragged me towards him. I started balling as he hugged me. Then he yelled to someone, "I've found Camille! She's alive!"Soon a bunch of people were crowding around me making me claustrophobic. Everyone was asking what questions, but some looked at me with sad eyes. A woman wearing a white blouse and hair into a tight bun pulled me aside. Into my bathroom and my uncle followed.
This woman bent over, "Camille?" She asked. I was dazed and exhausted and could barely tell what was going on. She straightened up and whispered something to my uncle who turned pale and nodded solemnly. He scooped me up and brought me to an ambulance.
People in white surrounded me and laid me down on a bed like thing. Then they put on a mask and I got drowsy. The last thing I
registered before I fell asleep was that my parents didn't come to check on me.
