Jorgen pov:

I clap my hand over her mouth as she screams, her cries tearing at my heart. She screams again and again, each cry growing weaker as she succumbs to her tears. She collapses into my arms, beating at my chest, her tears of silver soaking through to my skin. "Why?" she whispers. "Why, Manarak? Why my home? Can't you destroy someone else's life?! Leave my family be!" She screams in anguish, even as I clutch her to me.

"Odette, please, they'll hear."

"I don't care!" She screeches, ripping from me. "That's my home that just burned! Every memory of my life has been turned to ash! Everything!" She sobs, ripping out my heart. I lay her down and go in search of some chamomile, an herb good for inducing sleep. I mix some into water, and give it to her, heating it carefully. She drinks it, her screams now quiet sobs. I go back over to her, gathering her shaking frame in my arms. She fists her hands in my shirt, pounding my chest.

"Not everything." I whisper, holding her. "You still have everything that's at Hezegonja Manor." "And you have me." She smiles up at me, closing her eyes and drifting off to sleep. Her breathing evens out, and I hold her in my arms, singing the lullaby my mother sang to me before she passed. "Hush, dear one, sleep. The day is done, you've had your fun. Now close your eyes and rest. Rest, to play tomo-o-row. Dear Odette, my love, hush. Dearest one, hush. Hush." She smiles slightly in her sleep, her long black hair slipping over her shoulder and into her face. I tuck her hair behind her ear, memorizing the feel of her silken skin. She shivers in her sleep, and I tighten my arms around her, trying to protect her from the outside world. What are these feelings that she creates? I wonder. My heart breaks when she murmurs,

"Mama, no.." Oh, Odette. She curls closer to me, and I whisper to her.

"Odette, it'll all be alright. I'll take care of you, and I won't let anything hurt you. No one will hurt you, so long as you have me. It's alright. Hush..." Her bright blue eyes flutter open briefly, meeting with mine.
