Sonya
I giggled at the conversation I was having with my best friend, Mycah. Little did she know, I was about to drop a bomb on her. I’d known Mycah since we were 10 and I moved to her neighborhood. We’d been close since day one and one thing I knew about her was that her dating life sucked. As a magazine editor and journalist, she spent much time attending classy parties thrown by her company as well as others; however, she never had any raunchy hook ups, Cinderella stories, or anything else for that matter. She spent most of her time diving into her work and caring for others. The girl seriously needed to learn how to care for herself. At 24, we weren’t getting any younger and at least I dated. My best friend on the other hand was practically a damn nun.
“So guess what Mycah?” I exclaimed excitedly. She eyed my suspiciously.
“What Sonya?” I smiled my brightest smile
“Okay so you know how you’re a nun and always have these awesome work parties, by the way thanks for the invites!”
“Sonya what the hell are you up to?” I swung my hair behind my shoulder and spoke.
“So there’s this guy Les from my company. Totally hot, totally single, 6 figures, no kids, awesome car. And he my dear is going to be your date for the party Friday night Mmhm.” As I rambled on I pulled out my iPhone to show Mycah his Instagram.
“Well damn Sonny! Usually this would be the type of thing that would piss me off, but I’ve got to be honest. The man is borderline gorgeous. Ehh, I guess a date to the party won’t hurt. I just hope he isn’t a psycho.” We both laughed out loud.
“Yay! Awesome! He’ll pick you up Friday at nine. I’ll iMessage you his number so you all can speak before then”
“Okay, but I’m just saying, don’t ever do this again or it’s off with your head!” That’s my best friend. 5 feet tall, size 6 shoes, but the feistiest thing you’d ever meet!
“Got it tiger!”
I sipped from my mojito while I allowed my eyes to dart around the bar nervously. I actually had more news to tell Mycah and I knew she wouldn’t take kindly to it. I shivered at her touching my shoulder.
“Ummm Hello! Earth to Sonya! What the hell?” I snapped my head around to her.
“Oh, sorry Mycah.”
“Yeah mmhm. You’re doing your nervous stare. Something you want to share?” Might as well suck it up and tell her.
“Well actually Mycah, there’s something I have to tell you. Promise you won’t get too angry, okay?” Mycah grumbled at me.
“Ugh whatever, okay. What is it?”
“Well actually, Aaron is coming to town and he’s going to stay at our place for a few days.” Mycah starred at me like I was growing horns from my eyes. I offered a shy smile.
“Sonya what the actual fuck? Aaron your brother?” I nodded.
“Aaron I haven’t seen since we were 13 and he called me ugly and lanky and told me no one would ever want me?” I sighed. “Oh you have got to be shitting me!” Mycah stood up to leave and I grabbed her arm to stop her. A mad Mycah was a force to be reckoned with.
“Mycah, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. You know Aaron is in the military and he has some time off for the holidays and wanted to come spend it with me. You know me I couldn’t just throw him in a hotel.” I batted my eyelashes in attempt to flatter her. I prayed to God it worked. I know the last time Mycah had seen Aaron crushed her spirit dramatically, but I could only hope that she would find it in her heart to forgive him so that we could live peacefully while I hosted Aaron at our townhouse. It was a far stretch but I still wished for the best.
Mycah glared at me and spoke, “Ugh Sonya Alease Reynolds, I swear you better be glad you’re my best friend or I’d murder you! But I’m telling you, the first moment I have any BS out of Aaron, his ass is gone and your ass is grass, got it?” I nodded and grinned largely hugging her. She laughed a small laugh, and then I added a small detail. “Oh and by the way, I invited him to the party Friday night.” I mockingly shielded my face. Mycah glared at me once again.
“Dear Jesus I swear Sonya you will be the death of me. Ugh, okay.” I smiled and hugged her again.
“Thanks bestie! I promise to make it up to you! I love you!”
“Yeah, uh huh. I’m going home jerk. Catch you later.” I waved and hollered over my shoulder, “Toodles!” as she exited I spotted a gorgeous dark haired man sitting at the other end of the bar. I grabbed the rest of my drink and sashayed over while adorning my face with my Colgate smile.
