It was on the paved path of the street they've know for so long that the oak and maple trees blossomed. The vibrance of green on the birthed leaves reminded Sasuke of the eyes of the girl that was leading the way yet again. A scent of cherries rode on the spring breeze as they trailed on the road they've walked home from school for so many years. The scent filled his nostrils as he inhaled with a sense of contentment watching her from a short distance.
Coming home from martial arts, she always had a game she'd play where she balances herself on the line and couldn't take her feet off it as she carried on. She always wanted to finally get from the martial arts buildinh to home without going outside the line. Tight black shoes danced frigidly on the yellow paint and her arms reached out slowly for balance a little ungracefully, but for her, she had the grace of a ballet dancer.
Threads of gold showed boldly through the foliage as it illuminated full pink stands that fell perfectly at the shoulders. The white shirt has become a flaming wildfire and blue shorts had a darker shade than usual. Black eyes could only stare forward and a mouth full of a thousand words was sewn shut. He was a coward. Suddenly the girl lost her footing and stumbled outside the yellow line.
"Sakura?" He finally found his voice as he rushed forward to catch her small wrist. That's when her body spun and her face became unveiled by silk locks. A defeated smile came to crease her lips and emerald orbs set ablaze by the oncoming sunset captured his very gaze. He held his breath.
"Looks like I'll never get to the end of the road without stumbling, huh?" A small giggle escaped her and the boy carefully let go the wrist, but his gaze was unmoving. Her voice was always musical and every word there was a pattern of softness that always left him guessing which word would fall from her lips next. Usually he'd smile or give a small laugh, he never looked like this before. They were standing in front of each other now and Sakura became a little unnerved by the sudden look of desperation written on his soft, yet masculine features. Hands tentatively came behind her back in a habit of nervousness. Her best friend since practically birth has never looked the way he did at that moment.
"Sasuke, what's wrong?" The girl asked with nervousness gripping it's claws in her tone. The boy took a small step to close the gap to foot of space in between them. He has waited his entire life for this moment and today was the last day to change anything.
"Sakura." Sasuke's lips became dry as the name rolled so easily past them. Sakura became magnified under his gaze that seemed swallow her whole with just a stare. These eyes she's seen for years Sasuke never looked like that. Words escaped her and nothing came out, but a quick breath from a rapid heartbeat.
"What?" Sakura almost fumbled on the very simple word. Sasuke stood with his hands to his sides, towering over her in height, but still managed to look at her evenly. That day, she would either flee or be embraced whole heaftidly by the boy who never knew the definition of happiness until he met her. A quick inhalation through his nose once more , just to remember the faint smell of cherries in case he lost her forever.
"I love-" These uttered words would change the course of his life forever until he was cut off abruptly by a face full of concern. The child-like features that made her look so endearing were erased by a new found maturity that he never realized that was there.
"Sasuke"
