Chapter seven

“Celeste,” Alex mutters to me. “Lie down in the wagon.”

I’m too frozen to move. The world slows down. I cannot marry the prince… I see him step onto the stage. I remember his face… his face from all those years ago.

“Has anyone seen this lady?” the officer asks once more.

The bright stone buildings of Audenburg grey. The clouds go dark. I need to get out. The gate is only half the Forum away…

“It’s her!” Sofia shouts and points at me, smiling.

                “No…” I mumble.

Guards quickly swarm me. I try to wiggle free until one of them unsheathes his sword.

I’m brought on stage, I look at Prince Connor. His eyes are pitch black, it pales him. His hair is a dark blond. I don’t want to marry him.

“Celeste,” he whispers, and kisses my hand. “You grew up to be beautiful.”

I shake my head in tiny strokes. “I-I… can’t.”

“Put her into the carriage.” King Lenard instructs.

“Just in time for dinner, father.” Prince Connor comments.

I don’t move. I look back at my family. “Alex!”

He begins to push his way from the back of the crowd. Right as the guards begin to drag me, he grabs my hand.

                “I don’t want to go,” I whisper. “Don’t let me…”

“I’ll save you,” he says, as he is ripped from my grasp. He says something I do not hear.

I’m shoved in the carriage. Its cushions are cream colored and soft. The walls are made of a fuzzy material I do not know. Prince Connor and King Lenard are not in the carriage with me. The confined carriage walls make my back sliver with cold, like snakes crawling up.

The carriage lurches forward, and I’m being taken to Audenburg castle
